THE CHOOSE OHIO FIRST ENGAGED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN BIOSCIENCE AND HEALTHCARE AT CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY (Science Entrepreneurship)

Scholarships Available in Bioscience and Healthcare: $4700 per year to be awarded for the 2012- 2013 Academic Year

Science and medicine have a long tradition of engaged learning. This state-funded scholarship program is designed to attract and retain the best and the brightest students in the field of bioscience and healthcare across Ohio with a progressive engaged learning program in science entrepreneurship. CWRU will award scholarships in the amount of $4,700 per year to students majoring in Systems Biology, Biomedical Engineering, students enrolled in the Pre-Professional Scholars Program- Medicine, and graduate students in the Science and Technology Entrepreneurship – Biotechnology and Public Health Nutrition Masters Degree programs who are interested in a career in science entrepreneurship in Ohio. Choose Ohio First Scholars will engage in independent research, internships, and entrepreneurial experiences with peers at Cleveland State University, Baldwin-Wallace College, Hiram College, and Cuyahoga Community College. Graduates are expected to help advance economic development in Northeast Ohio and the State. Engaged Learning Scholars will choose from hundreds of engaged learning opportunities throughout Northeast Ohio’s growing bioscience and healthcare community, including hands-on experiences at the following partner institutions:  Academic—Cleveland State University, Cuyahoga Community College, Hiram College, Baldwin-Wallace College, and Case Western Reserve University’s Schools of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering;  Industry—The Cleveland Clinic, BioEnterprise, and Jumpstart. Expectations Choose Ohio First Scholars will be required to engage in four activities during their academic career; Previous experience may be considered as fulfillment of scholarship expectations: 1) Business or Science Entrepreneurship Course—at least one course 2) Research Experience—an independent research project in the laboratory; 3) Internship/Coop Experience—an immersion experience in industry or working laboratory; 4) Entrepreneurial Experience—mentoring by local science entrepreneurs, bioscience business incubators, or start-up companies.
