Hereby we’d like to provide you with information of formalities about application for visa, work permit and residence permit for staying in Shanghai.
Formalities that you need to go through vary according to your purpose of staying. So please refer to related category in accordance with your situation.

If you are not in the abovementioned categories, or if you are over the age of 65, or if you have any questions on application formalities, visa or residence permit of your accompanying family members, extension of visa or residence permit and etc., please don’t hesitate to contact your host institutions of CAS.
1 Ⅰ Visiting
Please apply for F visa in the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate. The duration of stay specified in an F visa does not exceed 180 days.
Please prepare the application documents in accordance with the requirement of the Chinese Embassy or Consulate where you would apply for visa.
Generally speaking, an invitation letter with inviting institution letter head bearing the signature of the inviter is indispensable
If the Embassy or Consulate requires an Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit, please contact the inviting institution which will apply for it to CAS. Information needed is as below:

After your entry into China, please obtain Registration Form of Temporary Residence from the hotel or the police substation of the area where you lodge within 24 hours of your entry into China
If the duration of stay needs to be extended in Shanghai, you could file an application with the Exit-Entry Administration of Shanghai Bureau of Public Security. The accumulated length of extension is not to exceed the original duration of stay specified in the F visa issued by the Chinese embassy or consulate.
2 Ⅱ Working

Step 1: To apply for Z visa to enter China
Application documents to be prepared by you: Your Employer assists you to file Application Form of Foreign Experts Working Permit application for Foreign Experts Curriculum vitae (Including education background and work Working Permit to Shanghai Municipal experience) Administration of Foreign Experts Copy of your passport Affairs (SHAFEA) Copies of highest diploma or professional certificates Health report issued by foreign medical institutions certified by Chinese embassy or consulate, or by health and quarantine institutions appointed by Chinese government Employment agreement Letter of Commitment
Examination and issue Foreign Experts Working Permit by SHAFEA Decision will be made within 20 working days upon acceptance of application
Employer applies for Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit to Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government or CAS
Please contact local Chinese embassy or consulate about the application documents. The basic materials include but are not limited to: 1. Passport Apply for Z visa at local Chinese embassy 2. Visa Application Form and Photo or consulate 3. Foreign Experts Working Permit 4. Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit

Examination and issue Foreign Experts Decision will be made within 7 working days upon acceptance of Certificate by SHAFEA application
Step 3: To apply for Residence Permit
Application documents to be prepared by you: Residence Permit Application Form with one recent 2-inch half- File application for Residence Permit length, bareheaded and full-faced photo to Exit-Entry Administration, Shanghai Original Registration Form of Temporary Residence Public Security Bureau (SPSB) Passport Original Health Certificate issued by Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center (SITHC) Foreign Experts Certificate

Examination and issue Foreigner Employment Permit by FEAD Decision will be made within 15 working days upon acceptance of application
Employer applies for Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit to Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government or CAS

Examination and issue Foreign Experts Decision will be made within 5 working days upon acceptance of Certificate by FEAD application
Step 3: To apply for Residence Permit
Application documents to be prepared by you: Residence Permit Application Form with one recent 2-inch half- length, bareheaded and full-faced photograph File application for Residence Permit Original Registration Form of Temporary Residence to Exit-Entry Administration, Shanghai Passport Public Security Bureau (SPSB) Original Health Certificate issued by Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center (SITHC) Originals of Foreigner Employment Certificate and Employment Registration Form

Step 1: To apply for X visa to enter China

Application Form for Admission for Foreign Students (UCAS) 2. Application Form for UCAS Scholarship 3. Notarized copy of doctoral degree certificate 4. Notarized copy of transcripts of doctoral study 5. Letters of recommendation (from two professors) 6. Curriculum vitae 7. Copy of passport
Examination and issue Admission Notice and Visa Decision will be made within 30 working days upon Application for Study in China (JW202) acceptance of application. In case of summer or winter holidays, the process would be prolonged for one to two months accordingly.

Visa Application Form and Photo consulate 3. Admission Notice 4. Visa Application for Study in China (JW202).
