AP Human Geography Migration U.S. Immigration Patterns

Directions: 1. You have to research six different immigration waves in the U.S., and will have to answer questions about the immigration period and the laws regarding immigration during those particular waves. If there are no specific laws for the given period of immigration, discuss the general attitude in the United States toward immigration citing examples to support your assertions. 2. You can use the information provided in your textbook, as well as any other helpful, reliable resources. The following website will be of benefit in your research efforts: History of Immigration and Immigration Laws in the United States http://www.umass.edu/complit/aclanet/USMigrat.html 3. Find one picture for each of the six waves that reflect the information in that section section. These pictures can be of the specific types of immigrants in the wave, the areas in which they settled or from which they came, the laws or effects thereof, etc. These pictures should be cut and pasted into a word document, or if you find pictures in encyclopedias or other texts, copy them and glue them to a piece of paper. 4. Following are the questions that need to be answered for each wave: Regarding the Period…  Who was coming to the U.S. during this period?  What did they expect to find/experience in the U.S.?  From where did they come and where did they settle in the U.S.?  When did they come?  Why did they leave their place(s) of origin?

Regarding the Laws in the Period…  To whom do the laws apply?  What do the laws say? OR What does the lack of legislation imply about the time period?  When were they instituted?  Where: Groups from what area(s) were most affected by these laws? OR what groups were most affected by the lack of legislation?  Why were the laws instituted? OR Why were laws not instituted in this period?
