Page 1 of 5 An Interview with the Principal

Written by: Ryaan Ali

R.H.L is an amazing place to learn and has an amazing principal, Ms. Zinn. I went and got an exclusive interview to get some of the best scoops from Ms. Zinn herself. She stated that she is quite proud with staff and students this year and that the year has been amazing. There have been many clubs going on and a collection of new ones such as Tech team, Eco club and Chess club. I also got the scoop on the amazing hockey stick benches to find that they are all helping the environment and super exclusive. Thanks to Mr. Martin and all the students that gave their broken hockey sticks for these amazing benches. I also asked Ms. Zinn about what's different about the school year and she thinks what makes this year so special is the new logo. Now if you don’t quite understand, the new logo is the leviathan logo influenced heavily by many of the different entries from last year. Everyone loves this logo and it has proven to be the right choice. I also asked Ms. Zinn about why she likes her position of principal. She says she enjoys getting to know more students and staff. I also asked where she sees the students this year in 10 years and she said that she sees everyone following their dreams and making good choices. She also feels this year has been exciting with almost 300 students performing in the winter concert, athletic teams doing amazing like usual and astounding dance performances thanks to all the teamwork of staff and students. Another question I asked is what she misses about teaching. Ms. Zinn misses getting to know students well and learning about their interests personally. So what's next for the year? Well spoilers ahead, Latin Fusion will go to the Peel Dance Showcase, “Aussie X” coming in to teach dance, a guest speaker (Micheal Wade) and grade sixes will be ready for a chance to see “The Wizard of OZ”. And like Ms. Zinn says, “Every day’s a New Adventure at R.H.L.”

Winter Concert Review

Hundreds of parents, friends, and family visited RHL on Thursday, February 18th, 2016 at 7:30pm. They saw how the talented students and teachers of RHL had perfected their performances. The performances were inspired by African-American artists who changed the world. Among the many groups that participated were Grade 6, 7 and 8

Page 2 of 5 Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Grade 7 and 8 vocal groups, RHL Choir, RHL Glee Club, and the Lyrical Dance group to name a few.

“ Michael Jackson Hit Mix” by the experienced Grade 8 Band featured epic instrumentals of “Billie Jean”, “Bad”, “Beat It”, and “Thriller” that had the crowd doing everything from simply tapping their feet to the sick beat to singing along and dancing. In contrast, “Glory” (originally by John Legend and Common) was beautifully covered by Grade 7 vocal and danced to by the Lyrical Dance group, emotionally moved the crowd. “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder performed by Grade 7 vocal and accompanied by Jaylon L., Alexander P., and Ashlyn C. was an energetic performance. The hip guitar, the neat drum kit and nifty piano made the gym sound like the 70s for a moment. The Glee Club made the song “Ain’t No Mountain High” into completely their own, adding some personal touches to it, in short it was unique. Jazz band’s snazzy “Fatburger” brought in nostalgic memories of the old days. The concert band performed “Lost Creek Adventure”, the audience thought the song had ended, when it was just before the big, heart- racing ending, and what an ending that was! Special thanks to Ms. Paige, Mr. Nash, Ms. Hill, and Ms. Gutierrez for preparing the performances.

There were so many more amazing performances, too many to name in this review. In short, we were given a throwback of the great accomplishments of black artists, Honestly, I feel bad for whoever missed this stunning concert. The thing is, you have to see it to believe it. Awards

The Fault in Our Stars

Written by: Olivia Boys-Eddy

John Green is an award winning author for many of his works including, “The Fault in Our Stars” which received the Michael L Printz Award, a 2009 Edgar Award and also was the finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

This novel deals with the fear of death, love and emotionally challenging situations. Hazel Grace is a terminal teenaged girl that is stuck to oxygen tank. Hazel is forced into a support group by her concerned Mother, meets Augustus Waters, a cancer remission patient. Hazel is afraid to let Augustus in her life because she does not want to hurt him when she eventually dies. Cancer doesn't stop the inseparable two from supporting each other in a loving relationship and seeing the world together with a new perspective.

The author, gently guides his young readers through two of life’s biggest events; love and death and teaches compassion and understanding along the way on this emotional rollercoaster.

Hazel says to her Mom, “I’m a grenade and at some point I’m going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, okay?” Hazel is describing her death and how she wants to avoid hurting anyone else emotionally. The thought of going to meet other cancer kids at a support group is a waste of time in her mind as she has no intention of making any friends regardless if her parents feel that she is depressed.

John Green examines life, love and death with honesty but always with a touch of sensitivity for his young readers to grasp. Green illustrates that it takes courage to take a risk on love and be loved but if you do, it’s one of life’s greatest gifts.

Month in Review

Written by: Lillian Luan, Rona Fang, Sankavi Jeyapalasingham

RHL’s February was, at no point uneventful. Throughout the course of 29 days, a diverse number of events and fundraisers were held and attended by the students of RHL.

On February 18th, RHL held its annual Winter Concert. After months of practice, the students and staff at RHL collaborated to showcase the school’s assorted art departments from vocals, to the lyrical group, to the bands. RHL’s

Page 4 of 5 students also hosted a bake sale, raising money for the RHL arts departments. Speaking of food, the Latin Fusion team conducted hotdog sales during lunch and they were very successful. In addition to the bake sale, what is perhaps the most innovative fundraiser was held by the Eco Club. RHL’s students brought in their dried markers, which helped raise money for RHL’s Eco Club. For each grade, the class with the most donated amount of markers will win a treat! In fact, students can still participate. Valentine’s Day also passed. An anonymous group of people decided to kindly grace the school with positive messages, bringing a smile to the students of RHL and spreading love.

RHL makes each page worth turning, keeping the students awaiting an extraordinary month for March. Kiwanis Festival

Written by: Lillian Luan, Sankavi Jeyapalasingham, Emily Thi

Congratulations to RHL’s very own concert band for bringing pride to our school by winning gold at The Kiwanis Music Festival. Although they were faced with tough competition from four other schools, the concert band did not fail to impress everyone with their musical talents and perseverance. The band began with a warm up in the first round, and preceded into theirs songs “Lost Creek Adventure” by Ed Huckeby, and “In the Beautiful Twilight” by William Owens. Despite the band’s original intention to attend with Mr. Nash as conductor, Ms. Hill and Ms. Cornacchia stepped in to assist the band when they needed it most. Sports Update

Congratulation for our very own Girls and Boys basketball teams for getting in the playoffs! On Thursday, (March 3rd) both of the teams played in quarter final matches right here! The Boys team unfortunately fell short against Balmoral. The loss makes them drop to Tier 2.
