Page 2 of 25 Abstract

On January 11, 2011, the New York State Education Department officially approved the New York Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics. This Curriculum Map for 8th grade was revised for the transitional 2011-2012 school year. The map is based on the 2005 standards and includes notations indicating CCLS alignment when possible and appropriate.

Rationale

On January 11, 2011, the Board of Regents approved the New York State Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics. Implementation of the New York State Common Core Learning Standards will begin in the 2011-2012 school year. Although New York State Assessments will continue to be aligned with 2005 Standards, State assessment results will be mapped to both existing NYS standards and the new NYS Common Core Standards.

SED has outlined six instructional shifts needed to effectively implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Math: focus, coherence, fluency, deep understanding, application and duel intensity. Each grade level has particular areas of focus. The eight grade focus area are: (1) reasoning and problem solving with linear equations and systems of equations, (2) Functions, and (3) two and three dimensional geometric figure analysis.

Page 3 of 25 In order to begin this process of implementation, this revised 8th grade curriculum map has been sequenced in the form of a calendar for the year 2011-2012. Whenever possible and appropriate, Common Core Standards have been added and aligned to current standards. Additional resources have been sited and included in the calendar for teachers. Using these resources will provide teachers with the opportunity to develop lessons that focus on reasoning and problem solving. The resources selected also provide problems of a more rigorous nature, giving students an opportunity for higher level thinking and problem solving. Pre-Algebra Glencoe Mathematics
