Integrated Novel Unit Olive’s Ocean By Jennifer Jones October, 2004 RE 5730 Integrated Novel Unit Olive’s Ocean Part 1 I would use Olive’s Ocean by Kevin Henkes with fifth graders. It is a good choice for this age group but a twelve because it is about a twelve year old girl finding herself. It is also appropriate for this age group because it deals with the issue of friendship, and at this age they are beginning to find out what qualities a true friend has, and who their true friends are. In the book Martha also has her first “boyfriend”, this is also something that many students at this age experience. The issue of aging grandparents is one that students may experience, and one that is handled well in the book. Finally, fifth graders study United States geography, and the book lends itself to studying the Midwest and the Atlantic Coast.
Some themes I would want to begin understanding include the following:
Theme 1: Geography/Setting - Where is Wisconsin located? What is it like? - Where is Massachusetts located? What is it like? - What are the differences and similarities between the Middle West and the Atlantic Coast?
Theme 2: Grandparents - Why is Godbee so special to Martha? - Why are grandparents and older people to be valued? - What special wisdom do grandparents and older people have to share? - What is it like to get older?
Theme 3: Personal Identity/Feelings - Olive had hopes, what are some of the student’s hopes? - Martha had wishes, a best day of her life, sad feeling; and students will examine their wishes, the best day of their lives, and what they do when they are sad. - Martha has a role within in her family, the students will identify her role by studying the characters of the book.
Theme 4: Careers - Martha’s mom was a morning talk show host, the students will have the opportunity to pick a guest and write questions for that guest. - Through an art activity student will get chance to become an illustrator like Wendell Minor and paint a landscape. Theme 5: The Ocean/Seashells - Students will look at the ocean and seashells through research and poetry.
