Game #152 of 1234. 1ST of 4

BOS Red Sox at KCA Athletics Baumann (BOS) vs. Tsitouris (KCA)

BALL PARK: KC MUNICIPAL; BP L HR FACTORS LF: 1-31, CF: 1-18, RF: 1-24 ATTEND:5457

Boston sends Kansas to their 4th loss in a row but it wasn’t easy. The Red Sox held a commanding 6-2 lead going into the 9th with Boston starter Frank Baumann looking for a complete game victory. In the bottom of the 9th, KC began a rally with one out when Roger Maris singled to CF followed by Bob Cerv’s 7th HR of the season (an L9 BP result)making the score 6-4 for Boston. Mike Fornieles was brought in to get the last two outs but he struggled when the first batter he faced, Kent Hadley smacked a double to CF. Frank House then singled Hadley home to make the score 6-5 Boston. Joe Demaestri then flew out to LF for the 2nd out of the inning. Russ Snyder pinch hit for KC relief pitcher Rip Coleman and nailed a double to RF and thanks to a blunder by a sleeping manager for KC, House had to stop at third due to his lead feat (the blunder was not pinch running Bill Tuttle for House who would have scored on that double). Whitey Herzog then flew out to CF to end the game. Baumann picks up his 1st win, Fornieless his 3rd save and Tsitouris his 1st loss but who knows what the outcome would have been had he MANGER FOR KC BEEN PAYING ATTENTION. No more late night games after working all day.

CHC Cubs at PIT Pirates ) Anderson(CHC) vs. Kline(PIT)

BALL PARK: Forbes Field; BP L HR FACTORS LF: 1-6, CF: 1-3, RF: 1-20 ATTEND:14421

The Cubs score two in the 1st and two in the 4th off of two Ernie Banks doubles to take the lead over the Pirates. After adding one more in the 5th from an Al Dark single, they hang on as the Pirates try to rally. After scoring one in the 6th the Pirates head into the 9th down by three. Bill Mazeroski leads off the 9th with a double. Groat singles to LF, moving Maz to 2nd. That prompts a pitching change as Don Elston comes in for starter Bob Anderson. Elston issue a walk to Virdon loading the bases with none out and pinch hitter Ted Kluzewski stepping up to the plate. Elston manages to get big Klu to ground into a 6443 double play, scoring Maz from third and putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with two down. Next up is Don Hoak who coaches a walk out of Eltson loading the bases once more. Roberto Clemente at the plate next ended the game by grounding out to short. Anderson gets his first win of the year, Elston his 2nd save. Kline picked up his 2nd loss.

Game #154 of 1234. 3rd of 4 SFG Giants at CIN Redlegs McCormick(SFG) vs. Purkey(CIN)

BALL PARK: Crosley Field; BP L HR FACTORS LF: 1-15, CF: 1-15, RF: 1-25 ATTEND:5932 NO RELIEF IN SIGHT. In a battle for first place in the NL, the Giants and Reds met for the first time this season. The Giants sent lefty Mike McCormick to do their bidding while the Reds countered with right handed Bob Purkey. At the end of seven innings, the Giants held a one run lead at 3-2. Mays had hit his league leading 9th homer of the season and McCormick was heading to his 2nd win of the season, or so he thought. The bottom of the 8th proved to be his undoing, as the Reds pushed acrossed three runs to go up by a 5-3 margin. After getting the first two batters out, McCormick allowed three walks and three singles before giving way to Al Worthington who struck out Roy McMillan to end the inning. In the top of the 9th, the Giants faced Tom Acker, who had just replaced Bob Purkey and had hopes of preserving Purkey’s 3rd win of the year. No such luck as the Giants watched Acker issue 4 walks and one single, scoring four big runs with Leon Wagner providing a key two run double off of Reds reliever Willard Schmidt who had just replaced Acker. The Giants had regained the lead at 7-5 heading into the bottom of the 9th and Stu Miller on the mound to nail down the win for Al Worthington. However, Miller must have liked the Reds Tom Ackers pitching style because he issued a single, a walk and another single to load the bases with none out and then gave up a base clearing double to Vada Pinson to give the Reds a one run win and sole possession of 1st in the NL. Willard Scmidt picked up the win, Stu Miller the loss along with a blown save. Tom Acker also had a blown save as the relief pitching did anything but provide relief.

Game #155 of 1234. 4th of 4 LAD Dodgers at MLW Braves Podres(LAD) vs. Spahn(MLW)

BALL PARK: County Stadium; BP L HR FACTORS LF: X-X, CF: X-X, RF: X-X ATTEND:15262

The Dodgers keep pace with the Reds by downing the Braves to remain just percentage points out of first place behind Cincinnati. It wasn’t until the 9th inning that the game was decided when LA scored three runs to break a 4-4 tie and hand Warren Spahn his third loss of the year. Don Zimmer led the inning off with a GO5. Joe Pignatano then drew a walk. PH Jim Baxes next singled to RF moving Pignatano to 3rd. Wally Moon was inserted as a PR for Baxes and Don McMahon entered the game in relief of Spahn. Jim Gilliam then hit a double to RF scoring both Pignatano and Moon from 1st. Neal next singled in Gilliam for the 3rd and final run of the inning as Demeter grounded out to SS and Furillo struck out. Clem Labine then entered the game and retired the Braves first three batters to pick up his 4th save of year.
