Connecting to Ivey remotely via a VPN

During recent years, the frequency of hacker and virus attacks against corporate resources has increased to the point that the Global Internet Community was forced to react or fold. In response, various Internet Service Providers (ISP) around the world have decided to block key portions of the Internet network traffic in an effort to remove the attack ability of remote hackers. Although this can dramatically reduced your exposure to security related events, it has the side- effect of disabling remote access to corporate facilities.

Sites such as Ivey rely on the Internet to be our primary access method as our people travel abroad. Now that random ISPs are blocking portions of everyone’s traffic, we can no longer assume that reliable and usable connectivity exists between two sites.

Introducing the Ivey VPN:

Server: vpn.ivey.ca User Name: (your Ivey username) Password: (your Ivey password)

Important Note:

A VPN connection is ‘a connection on top of a connection’. You must be connected to the Internet using whatever is appropriate for your location. After you have successfully made your connection to the Internet, you can establish the VPN to Ivey. The VPN by itself will not connect you to Ivey. How to configure your PC (using Windows XP)

Before you can use any VPN service, you must add a connection to that service. I will detail the steps required to create that connection.

1. You must run the ‘New Connection Wizard’. Depending on how you have your Windows XP configured, it can be found via 1 of 2 methods:

(a) Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections (b) Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections

Under Network Tasks, you want to Create a new connection The box illustrated below will appear. Simply click on the Next> button… 2. You will be prompted to select the type of connection you are creating. Depending on the configuration of your PC, you may be presented with 3 or more choices. The correct response is: Connect to the network at my workplace

3. Select the type of connection you will be using. The correct response is: Virtual Private Network connection 4. Name your connection. I suggest “Ivey VPN”

5. Give the name of the VPN server. The server is called: vpn.ivey.ca 6. The next question may or may not appear on your screen and do not worry if it skips past the question. It is only useful if you have multiple people logging in and using YOUR personal computer. I normally select “Anyone’s use”.

7. We are almost done. Make sure you have checked the box that says ‘Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop’ Logging in:

Double click on the Ivey VPN icon on your desktop. You should see a box popup that looks similar to the image below.

User name: (your Ivey username) Password: (your Ivey password

Disconnecting:

In the lower right hand corner of your screen, you will see the following icon. Right click and select disconnect.
