6th Grade Jobs vs. Careers Worksheet First and Last Name Career Standards: MSCA6-1: Students will understand the personal nature of work and how it relates to them as individuals and as integral parts of society. a) Identify reasons why individuals work (economic, social, and psychological). b) Compare and contrast jobs vs. careers.

Business and Computer Science Standards MSBCS-BCSI-2: Students will identify and demonstrate computer maintenance and safety. a) Explain basic file management. b) Create a folder/directory.

MSBCS-BCSI-8: Students will utilize word processing software. a) Identify and explain basic word processing terminology (file, open, save, print, copy, paste, toolbar, highlight, font, etc.). c) Create and save a basic word processing document.

Essential Questions: 1. Why is basic file management important? 2. What is a folder and how do you create one? 3. How do you create and save a word document? 4. What is the purpose of a table? 5. What is the difference between a job and a career? 6. Do you want a job or a career in the future? 7. Why do people work?

Part 1 1. Insert the following table: You will need 2 columns and 8 rows. You will type the terms and definitions.

Terms Definition Career Time spent in one type of job or area of interest earning money. For a career, a person may need training, or have to attend college. A career is working in a job that you like or enjoy. A career to some people may be a job to others. Example: The teacher loves to teach so that would be his/her career, but for some people they would hate to stand in front of a group of students every day so teaching for them would be a job. Job Working at a particular thing for money; you must have the money but do not enjoy your position. A job to some people may be a career to others. Example: I would not like to be in the heat driving a bull dozer all day, so that would be a job to me, but some people love being outside and driving heavy equipment, so it is a career to them. Needs What you need to survive (food, water clothing, and shelter. Wants What you would like to have but do not need to survive.

Part 2: 1. You will insert a table with 2 columns and 6 rows. 2. Under each heading give 5 examples of careers and 5 examples of jobs. The first one has already been done for you. Student answers will vary depending on how you would view an occupation.

Part 3: Type and answer the following questions based on the information you put in your table:

1. What do the occupations on both of these lists have in common?

2. What is the main difference between the two lists? Explain

3. How are the education level requirements different on the two lists? Explain

4. Which list would you like your future employment to come from in the future? Explain why you select the list you choose?

5. How does having a job or career in the future impact your lives in the future? Explain

Part 4: Insert a table. You will need to decide the number of columns and rows. Type the terms and definitions.

The people in America work for different reasons. The reasons why people work can be divided into 3 sections:

Terms Definitions Economics deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services (Money) Social concerned with human beings and their relationships to each other (Friends) Psychological of the mind, reasons people act, think and feel as they do (peace of mind)

Type and answer the following questions with either (economics, social, or psychological). Some questions may have more than one answer.

1. What is the number one reason why your parents work? 2. What is the number one reason why people across America work? 3. What do you think will be the most important reason why you will work in the future? Collage Project

1. Open a new document in Microsoft Word.

2. Press Control, Enter to get another page. (You should have two pages in all)

3. Create a collage about Jobs on Page 1. (Include 10 pictures and 10 shapes)  You will type the following title in the Center of the page: Collage of Jobs and Careers. (Press ENTER and type your name)  Click on the Insert tab and select Clip art  In the Search Box, type the name of a “Job” and click Go. Example: Cashier  After you place the clip art on your screen, make sure you change your text wrapping to: IN FRONT OF TEXT!  Click on the Insert tab and select shapes.  Select a shape large and open enough to type the name of your Job. Click and drag to draw the shape on your screen.  Right-click on the shape and select “Add Text”  Continue inserting 10 clip art picture and 10 shapes to create a collage of jobs on page 1. 4. Create a collage about Careers on Page 2. (Follow the instructions in step 3.

5. When you are finished, Open another Word document and insert two pages. Create a collage called “All about Me” on page 1. Create another collage on page 2 about the topic of your choice.
