I. Title : CSC4072 Practicum in Server Administration

II. Credit: 2 semester credit hours.

IV. Course Description Students will complete a comprehensive project to demonstrate knowledge and skills in computer server administration. Each student will plan, design, create, test, and document a server infrastructure based on a set of criteria provided by the instructor. Components may include database systems, email servers, web service, file servers, authentication management, middleware, audio and visual streams, and security management. Prerequisites: CSC-3031 and CSC-3032 Database Management Systems and Laboratory.

V. Position of the course in the college curriculum This course is a senior level course in the Computer Systems and Network Engineering major. It provides the students with a significant practical experience to demonstrate and measure the student’s achievement in the major.

VI. Objectives of the course for the student A. To provide a practical experience by completing a significant server and system administration project. B. To demonstrate proficiency in computer server and system concepts and methodologies developed both in courses and in the achievement of certifications. C. To design, build, test, document and demonstrate a server system infrastructure using requirement specifications developed in consultation with the instructor.

IX. Text and Readings

The documentation and resources to be used will depend on the specific projects that are selected by the student and instructor.

X. Schedule Preparation: This course is normally taken in the spring semester of the student’s final year to build on the background that the student has acquired in earlier courses.

Meetings: The course instructor individually guides the project work to be completed by each student. Students will meet initially as a group for general guidance, but as students work on their projects, each student will be expected to meet with the instructor individually on a weekly basis for a status report, evaluation and planning of next steps for the project. XI. Methods used in this class A unique set of requirement specifications will be developed for each project to utilize the specific areas of specialization and project objectives chosen by the student. Students will be required to complete and document a series of milestones in the process of completing the practicum.

Project Milestones: 1. Project Proposal (5%) 2. System Requirements Specification with prioritized requirements (15%) 3. Research results on possible solutions (with table matching requirements) (5%) 4. High level system architecture (with diagram showing major components) (5%) 5. Equipment and system components specification (5%) 6. System test specification (5%) 7. System implementation and test results (25%) 8. System presentation and demonstration (20%) 9. System documentation (for users and system maintainers) (15%)

XII. Method of evaluation

Each milestone will be assigned a grade based on completeness, quality of work, applicability to requirements, and clarity of written documentation. The overall course grade will be determined from the milestones by a weighted average as indicated above.

Grading Scale: The final grade for the course will be based on the following scale. A (93-100%) A- (90-93%) B+ (87-90%) B (83-87%) B- (80-83%) C+ (77-80%) C (73-77%) C- (70-73%) D+ (67-70%) D (60-67%) F (below 60%)

Academic Integrity Policy: Learning is your personal responsibility. You may receive help from the instructor and from fellow students, but it is your responsibility to learn the skills and knowledge that are developed in this project. When developing a computer system, it is not acceptable to submit or copy someone else’s work as your own (with or without that person’s knowledge), and software and files should only be copied if the source of the files is accurately acknowledged in the documentation for the project. Suspected violations of academic integrity will be handled according to the policy and procedure stated in the MVNU catalog and Student Handbook. In particular, the penalty for a first offense will be zero credit on the particular assignment or project milestone. Serious or repeated offenses will be reported to the Office of Academic Affairs for disciplinary action.
