Dear Parent or Guardian, We would like to share with you the teaching arrangement that we will be using in your son/daughter’s US History class this semester. In his/her class, there will be two teachers working with all the students in the class. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Standen will be available during this hour to work, teach and help your son/daughter. We would like to encourage you to contact either one of us if you have any questions about this teaching arrangement.

During this class, we will be using a model called “co-teaching” to meet the needs of all students in the class. We will both be actively planning for the class and sharing in the grading process. We want you to feel comfortable to contact either one of us about your son/daughter’s performance this semester. We look forward to working with you and your son/daughter.

Attached you will find the syllabus for this class that contains information about expectations, procedures, grading policies, etc. Please read and sign the back page. Your son/daughter needs to return this for a grade of 10 points by Friday, September 15th. Sincerely,

American History prior to the Civil War Content will be studied in a review unit at the beginning of the class. Then, the making of modern America will be studied in detail. As a part of this study, the contributions of all Americans will be emphasized. Political, economic and social developments will be analyzed as well as America's advancement to the position of a world leader.

Essential Outcomes Students will demonstrate their understanding of: of the Course Chapters 6-7 1. Students will understand changes and consequences relating to movement of people, land usage, and destruction of Native American culture on the Great Plains from 1870-1900. 2. Students will understand the problems related to urbanization—housing, crime, sanitation, water, fire, and transportation. 3. Students will understand the factors related to the growth of industrialization and its impact on cities, the environment, and people. 4. Students will be able to compare and contrast immigrant groups coming to the U.S. from 1870-1910 and Nativists’ reaction to immigration.

Chapters 9-11 5. Students will understand the origin, goals, and results of the Progressive Movement. 6. Students will understand the factors that led to imperialism, the consequences of U.S. involvement in foreign affairs and factors that lead to the U.S. becoming one of the worlds leading military powers. 7. Students will understand the causes of WWI, the impact of U.S. involvement, and the impact of the Treaty of Versailles.

Chapters 14-15 8. Students will understand the intolerance and fear that characterized the 1920s and returned the U.S. to a policy of isolationism. 9. Students will understand the impact that advancements in technology and changes in culture had on U.S. society. 10.Students will understand causes of the Great Depression, its impact on people, and presidential responses to this event. 11.Students will understand the major policies and programs of the New Deal its impact on people and the government. Texts and/ or Other Materials Materials 1. The textbook students will use is The Americans. 2. Students should purchase an 8 ½ x 11 inch notebook of at least 100 pages to be used only for US History. 3. You will need a pencil and highlighter. Colored pencils and glue are recommended. 4. Students should have folders for organizing handouts, homework, etc.

Students are to come to class prepared EVERYDAY to work with writing utensil, NOTEBOOK and book.

*If a student is not prepared with a writing utensil, one will be loaned to the student in exchange for collateral. (cell phone, headphones, or other item of personal value)

Grading Practices Your grade will be determined by dividing the number of points and Procedures you have earned by the number of points possible. Furthermore, grades will include homework, class assignments, Interactive Student Notebook, quizzes, tests, projects and participation.

In addition, students will earn a 5 point stamp on each assignment in their Interactive Notebook. Stamps are earned for work that is:  Complete and finished in a timely fashion  Quality  Accurate/Follows directions  Original  Appropriate behavior

Stamps will not be issued for students that are serving ISS/OSS on days that assignments are assessed for stamp points.

Semester grades will be determined by: 80% 1st, 2nd, 3rd Marking Periods 20% - semester exam

Class Participation—A portion of your grade will be class participation. You will be assessed and earn up to 25 points a week. We will follow the district “CA ROCKS” expectations and the classroom constitution when assessing participation.

Positive participation means: following instructions and class rules, treating others with respect, coming to class prepared, staying on task, helping your partner(s), listening, and anything that helps class run smoothly. Participation points will be deducted for violations to CA ROCKS and the classroom constitution. Some examples of deductions include but are not limited to:  absent  distracting behavior, don’t work  sleep  do not begin class immediately  no book, pencil  tardy

Discipline We are reasonably flexible and patient. We enjoy teaching and the company of students. However, we have zero tolerance for students who are rude, interrupt others, disrespectful of others or disrupt the learning environment. Chronic misbehavior will result in: 1. conference between the teachers and the student 2. a telephone call home 3. referral to the behavior interventionists and/or assistant principal’s office 4. gross misconduct-sent immediately to the principal’s office

Civic Responsibility As part of the social studies expectations, students will engage in civic responsibility throughout the course. Students will take on leadership roles within the classroom as outlined by student management positions. These positions include:  Tutors  Teacher Assistant  Materials Manager  Greeter

Students are expected to perform two different roles throughout the semester. Students will receive a performance grade as a leader in the classroom while serving in their assigned role for the week. They can be used in class only for instructional purposes with teacher permission. Inappropriate use will result in confiscation of the device and will require a parent pick-up and possible disciplinary action.

“Cell Phones and Electronic Devices Students may be in possession of electronic devices such as cell phones, IPods, MP3s, gaming devices, etc, at school with the understanding that the school district will not be responsible for damage, theft, or loss of such devices. Cell phones/electronic devices should be silenced and not used under any circumstances while classes are in session (including 7th hour) without approval from the supervising teacher 19 or an administrator. Teachers may include other restrictions during their class periods as they deem necessary.

Cell Phones/Electronic Devices are permissible for use:

In the morning before the start of school During passing time throughout the school day During a student’s lunch period

Out of respect and as a common courtesy electronic devices shall not be used in any school office or area of business within the high school building (i.e. Main Office, Guidance/Counseling Office, Student Support Services Office, Athletic Office, Attendance Office, etc).

Consequences for cell phone/electronic device violations are as follows: 1st Offense – Confiscation and returned upon parent/guardian pick-up or picked up by the student on the following Monday of each week. 2nd Offense – Confiscation and returned upon parent- administrator meeting. 3rd Offense – Confiscation and two day out-of-school suspension.

Failure to surrender an electronic device to a staff member will result in a one (1) day inschool-suspension if the device is surrendered to an administrator. Failure to surrender to an administrator will result in a two (2) day out-of-school suspension.”

***Note to parents: Please respect student handbook guidelines for student use of cell phones. This includes texting/calling students during instructional periods. Please be of the understanding that students will be allowed to contact you during designated times outlined in the student handbook.

Academic Integrity All students must do their own work. Cheating or copying another student's work will not be tolerated. Cheating and copying this will result in loss of credit for the particular work and may warrant a zero grade, a referral to the office for disciplinary action, and/or phone call to parents for both parties.
