SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE !

JOHN M. LYNCH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AWARD

AWARD: Two $500 awards.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Susquehanna Township High School graduating seniors with plans for higher education.

CRITERIA: Write a 500-word essay on the importance of local government in our everyday lives. Extra consideration will be given to essays that give concrete examples of how local government directly affects Susquehanna Township and its residents. A panel of community leaders will judge the essays, and winners will be announced at the Senior Academic Awards program in May.

BACKGROUND: The program was created to honor John M. “Jack” Lynch’s commitment to public service and local government. Before being elected Susquehanna Township Commissioner in 1973, Mr. Lynch ran for Mayor of Harrisburg, basing his 1967 campaign on the need for government officials to be accountable to those who elected them. Although he lost in a close election, he was widely credited with helping to inspire the “Greater Harrisburg Movement” in 1969 and the strong-mayor form of government in Harrisburg today. Mr. Lynch began his career as a news reporter for the Associated Press and, before he died in 1974, served as Deputy Auditor General for Robert P. Casey Sr.
