Newsletter No. 1 autumn 2015 Our focus value for our Collective Worship this half term is Creativity. Welcome back everybody. We hope that you had a good (not too damp) summer break. Thank you to everybody for the generous gifts and cards for the staff. The teachers have had a busy summer preparing the classrooms and planning an exciting and engaging curriculum for your child. 2014 – 2015 was a fantastic year for celebrating an amazing attendance record, with over 45% of children being in school for over 98% of the year and an incredible 14% achieving a 100% attendance record. This is super news for the children – and we want to thank you all for working with us.
I’m looking for a small band of enthusiastic gardeners to help me tidy up the front flower beds after school sometime soon, as the wet weather has resulted in a mass of wonderful weeds to admire!
You will be pleased to hear that Miss Hogg gave birth to a bouncing boy – Henry – in the summer – all 10lbs of him!
A reminder that the school day starts promptly at 8:50 and ends at 3:20.
The Rabbits are quickly settling into their new class and making friends. Over the next few days we are creating an online tool called Tapestry which we will use to record photos, capture work and write comments about each child – creating a diary to celebrate their achievements - and we want parents and carers to take part too. Miss Garland will be teaching the class Monday morning and Thursdays and Fridays; Mrs Duncan on Monday afternoons, Tuesdays and Wednesdays … and Mrs Parr will sneak in occasionally to join in the fun, especially if the train track is out!
I hope that you have all had a fantastic summer and enjoyed the holidays! I am looking forward to another super, exciting year in the Squirrel class! I have a very busy half term planned for the children which promises to be both exciting and engaging. Out topic for the term Barningham which will be linked throughout the curriculum to the children’s learning. Will from SSCO will be coming in to teach the children about games and strategies once a week. PE will be indoors and therefore the children don’t need plimsolls, it is advisable for PE kits to be in school every day please. Homework will be given out on Monday’s and handed in on Fridays. We will have an Exciting Writing session at the end of each literacy module. Exciting writing is an opportunity for the children to ‘show off’ what they have learned over the module. I will send information home about Exciting Writing with homework when necessary, giving you the opportunity to discuss this with your child. As mathematicians we will focus on learning the times tables and applying our knowledge in many different ways. If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to come and see me, my door is always open and I am available to listen and help wherever possible. Miss Orritt.
Badgers are going to STOMP! I hope you have all had a wonderful summer holiday and are ready for an exciting year in Badger Class. Our topic this term is India, a really interesting and diverse topic that I know your children will really enjoy. As writers we are going to be comparing stories by the same author, writing a set of instructions, studying stories from other cultures, looking at poetry and letter writing. As mathematicians we will be solidifying our knowledge of number and place value, looking at the four operations, focusing on learning to tell the time and looking at the properties of 2d and 3d shapes. As scientists we will be focusing on light and shadows and linking this to DT, English and our India topic by designing and making a shadow puppet theatre and then using this to retell Indian stories. As geologists we will be studying the globe and maps to compare India to other countries in particular the UK, focusing on physical characteristics such as climate and land use and Human characteristics such as religion, transport, homes and clothes. As artists we will be studying art that is influenced by Indian culture and Indian craftspeople and looking at the influence of the British Empire on Indian art. In PE we are fortunate to have Premier Sports who will be taking the children for outdoor games. We will also be covering gymnastics and having a go at becoming Indian dancers. In RE we will be focusing on Sikhism with a Sikhism day at the end of September. As musicians we will be finding out about Indian music and trying our hand at composing our own piece of Indian style music! In ICT we will use the internet to carry out research on India and use this to produce a Power Point presentation. As you can see we are going to be very busy this term! Mrs Fairlie
Welcome to the Owl Class! I hope you have all had a fantastic summer and a well-earned break. We have got some fabulous topics planned for this year, including our topic for the autumn term which is going to be ‘The Victorian Empire’. If you have any resources or books that you feel would support with our topic this term and you are willing to bring them in then please do so, it would be very much appreciated. As historians, we are going to explore Victorian history. We will be thinking carefully about our own enquiry questions for research and using these within our history sessions to research, explore and compare and contrast. As geographers, we are going to look at the British Empire. We are going to explore what the British Empire was and locate and identify countries that were within the British Empire. As writers, we are going to look at the work of Charles Dickens and his well-known novel, Oliver Twist. We are also going to be exploring and creating pieces of persuasive writing, information texts and recounts. As mathematicians, we are going to be carrying out tasks and solving mathematical problems using symbols, words and diagrams. We will be exploring place value to multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100 and 1000 and will be using all four operations with decimals to two places. We will be exploring fractions and how to simplify and solve simple problems involving ratio and direct proportion. We will be learning how to use appropriate non-calculator methods for solving problems that involve adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing any three-digit number by any two-digit numbers. We shall interpreting coordinates in all four quadrants and exploring how to draw angles to the nearest degree. We will be finding the area and perimeter of a range of shapes and identifying symmetries of 2-D shapes, as well as finding the mean, median, mode and range of a set of data and interpreting graphs and diagrams and draw conclusions. As scientists, we are going to focus on humans and other animals and the importance of our bodies and keeping healthy. Just a few of the areas we will be focusing on are: foods and their nutrients, digestion, growth, the respiratory system, the heart and the circulatory system, pulse and pulse rates, diet, exercise and hygiene. As artists, we are going to be learning about painting and printmaking. We are going to be looking at the famous artist, William Morris and using his artistic style within our own pieces of art. As design technologists, we are going to be designing, constructing and evaluating Victorian toys. In French, we are going to be exploring French greetings, personal information and describing members of the family and people. Within PE, we are going to be exploring both netball and hockey. As musicians, we are going to continue to learn to play the clarinet and we are going to explore rounds within music and sound sources. In RE, we are going to be learning about Christianity. The teaching of ICT will be taught throughout the curriculum and we will be taking on the role of market researchers and exploring productivity. If you have any queries, concerns or questions please do not hesitate to speak to me at the end of the school day. Mrs J Tomkinson
