2017-2018 Pre-AP Geometry Syllabus Mrs. Powell

Welcome to Mrs. Powell’s Classroom! I would like to go over some important information and expectations to help my students be successful in my classroom this year.

- Website : http://www.newcaneyisd.org/Domain/3247 - Contact: Email: [email protected] Phone: (281) 577-2800 x5241 Canvas: Students are encouraged to use Canvas for all means of communication outside of school with the teacher. Notifications are encouraged to be set up through Canvas to receive any announcements or updates on assignments.

Tutoring - Students are encouraged to attend tutoring regularly and can visit any math teacher for assistance. The following tutoring times are subject to change at teacher discretion. Tutoring by appointment is also available but must be communicated through Canvas in advance. Students must bring material they need assistance with, as the geometry teachers may not be doing the exact same assignments.

Mr. Mottola (Geometry) Mrs. Powell (Pre-AP Geometry) Mon. - Thur. 7:00am - 7:45am

Online learning - Students will be expected to have an active Canvas account for use throughout the year. Students will also be expected to complete online assignments and activities daily.

Homework/In Class Assignments - Practice is very important in mastering Geometry and a homework/in class assignment can be expected daily.

Grades - It is important for both students and parents to go online to check grades for each class. Geometry grades are based on 60% major grades (tests/projects) and 40% formative grades (Homework/In Class Assignments). There will be a minimum of 3 major grades per grading period.

Reassessment policy - Students can reassess one major grade per grading period. Students have exactly one week after the test to arrange a reassessment and tutoring times. Students must attend tutoring at least once before the reassessment will be given. Students must also complete any missing assignments before reassessing. Students can earn up to an 80% on a reassessment. Reassessment will sometimes not be able to be given based on time constraints of grading periods. Do not wait until the last minute!

Late Policy - If a student has a zero, it’s very important to get this assignment turned in ASAP. Students do not have an indefinite amount of time to turn in missing work. One zero can hurt a student’s grade. 15 points will be taken off for every class day an assignment is late.

Quizzes - Students should expect a quiz regularly over previously taught material. Quizzes will not always be announced in advance.

Technology in the classroom - Students are expected to bring their charged chromebooks daily as the majority of assignments will need to be completed on it. Students will be issued a TI - nspire CX to use during class. Students are expected to respect the device and to be returned to the proper caddy at the end of the period. Students will be responsible for damage or theft of their issued device. If the device goes missing or becomes damaged students are expected to report the issue immediately.

Suggested supplies - - Expo dry erase markers (for classroom) - Box of tissues(for classroom) - 3 ring binder 2 or more inches - 1 pack of dividers for binder - Composition Notebook - College ruled paper - Pencils to be used daily - Compass - Ruler - Protractor - If a calculator is required at home we suggest you purchase a TI - nspire CX

Please email myself at any time throughout the year if any questions arise. My goal is to help each student succeed, in any way I can. In return, each student needs to realize it is their job to follow the expectations of class… being prepared for class(binder, pencils, chromebook, etc.), actively participating during the lesson by following along and taking notes, doing all assigned work, going to tutoring when difficulty arises and being prepared for tests. I am looking forward to a great year!

Thank You, Kelsey Powell
