Keep the Heat

th Due Date: March 24th & 27 2012 (Block A or B) **Make sure you bring your project in on the due date. You will lose FIVE points for each day that the capsule is late.

Project description In this project, you will design and build an insulated device that will most efficiently retain the heat of approximately 100 mL of heated water in a standard (355 mL/12 oz) aluminum beverage can for 15 minutes. The objective of this project is to reinforce the concepts of heat transfer and thermodynamics.

Project specifics The maximum dimensions of the device cannot exceed 30 cm (across, down or diagonal) in any direction. The mass of the empty capsule cannot exceed 500 grams (empty aluminum can included). 500 grams is just less than 1 pound. If you would like to weigh your capsule prior to the due date, please bring it into our classroom.

All materials must be OUTSIDE the can. Only water and the thermometer will be put in the can on the day of the experiment.

There must be easy access for the thermometer to go into the can and stay in the can for the duration of the testing. For example, if you have a lid on your capsule you will need a hole on your lid which is large enough for a thermometer to fit. The hole in the lid would have to line up with the top opening of the aluminum can for the thermometer to measure the temperature of the water.

The top opening of the aluminum soda can, inside of your capsule, must have easy access for pouring the water into the can at the start of the experiment by use of the funnel shown in class. The water will be added to the can by the teacher. Materials The students should supply materials to fit their own design including the 12 oz aluminum can.

The following materials are prohibited and if used will result in NO credit (zero): * Fiberglass * Instant heat packs * Spray foam or spray insulation * Bubble wrap * No thermos, coolers, pre-made containers or drink huggies * Batteries/Electricity * Flames or other heat source * The device must be CONSTRUCTED BY YOU (i.e. you must build the shape of the device, you build the sides, bottom and top) (attaching / gluing pre-made materials is not CONSTRUCTING) See your teacher for any questions. DO NOT wait until the day prior to the project to see if your capsule will receive credit. * Any other materials prohibited by the teacher – Be sure to ask your teacher BEFORE using any material which may be questionable. Your teacher is the person who you need to check with about questionable materials (not the person at a store). I would ask Mr. Stewart about any material you choose to use in your capsule prior to building the capsule. Here is how you will be graded:

Heat Device (20 points) ______Efficiency rating*** (10 points) ______Write – up (45 points) ______

TOTAL POINTS (75 points) ______

*** Efficiency rating = (Temp. change of water in device/temp. change of control) X 100 10 points = 0 – 30% loss of heat 7 points = 31% - 50% loss of heat 3 points = 51% - 74% loss of heat 0 points = > 75% loss of heat
