jazzweek.com • December 11, 2006 JazzWeek 8 Radio Q&A: Tom Mallison, Public Radio East

om Mallison has been a steady presence in the jazz commu- nity thanks to the long-running An Evening With Tom The TJazzman. But more than simply doing a radio show, Mallison is an award-winning advocate for jazz music, helping to grow the community by linking his North Carolina audience to the many artists, labels and concert venues that are also part of the scene. Of course he’s a regular of the JazzWeek and IAJE conferences where he seems to know everyone and talk to everyone while somehow catching a ton of shows as well. He’s a jazz fiend and a Southern gentleman all rolled into one, which explains why he’s so liked and respected. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: When did you first get into radio? Tom Mallison: I started collecting Jazz when I was 12 years old and was listening to Sid McCoy on WCFL in Chicago. I played saxophone, so the music was what attracted me more than singers and words. In 1962 I won a radio-programming contest using my collection. The station offered me an air shift the next week and that was the real first experience in being on the radio. It was a Top 40 station, but they allowed me to program without boundaries. I was playing Basie, Ellington, Ferguson, Jamal, Three Sounds, Herbie Mann, Miles Davis, Cannonball along with Percy Faith, Nat King Cole, Ted Heath, Gordon Jenkins, Joe Bushkin. Just good listenable music. You’ve been a DJ for a number of years. Two ques- tions: How do you think the environment has changed? How has your approached to program- ming and DJ-ing changed. My experience as an outsider coming insider, in com- mercial radio, to do programming has generally been that most radio stations were not operated like a real photos courtesy Tom Mallison business. Lots of poor and faulty equipment. ➤ jazzweek.com • December 11, 2006 JazzWeek 9 Radio Q&A: Tom Mallison (continued)

Lots of emotion and reactionary behavior. I have always programmed and en- gineered my own programs and usually was the only person at the stations while I was on the air. Five hours is a long stretch at the microphone. What special challenge does this present, either for you or in trying to keep the audience onboard? Time flies very quickly when you love what you are doing. Selecting music, honoring listener suggestions, taking phone calls and monitoring email, and Now I am much multi-tasking, makes the evening go by very quickly. Sometimes it is after five hours that I realize I need a bathroom break. Since I hear ev- new releases are erything I say I tend to not talk as much as some radio personalities. I believe the listeners are there to hear my programming and not my talk, so I try to familiar and the program with a good flow and connectiveness of selections to keep the listen- ers. Listeners do like to know what I have played and how to add much of the classics are new music to their collection. I have a distribution list of listeners that I use each to them. With the week to send out my playlist by time played, artist/group, selection and label. I also send out the JazzWeek Top 50 list to this same distribution list to help lis- older listener it is teners be able to order the selections I play and those that are on the list. the reverse. ... Seems like a good idea to me. How much new music do you play each week? That all depends on what you call new music. That has changed through the years. In the last couple of years I have played probably 95% releases from the last six months with jazz evergreens sprinkled in the mix. Years ago I was playing 75% evergreens and a minimum of new music. Now I am much more conscious of introducing listeners to new releases and artists. For the young listeners the new releases are familiar and the classics are new to them. With the older listener it is the reverse, the classics are nostalgia and the new releases broaden and educate them to the current music scene. As someone who has done radio as a hobby and a passion rather than as a job, how do you think that has affected your approach? Having been employed by a Fortune 10 (DuPont) company I have much more of a business focus and think of the listeners in the context of customers. Without them there is certainly no need for me to be programming music. I can listen to what I like in the comfort of home or in my car. I believe this is why I am so willing to openly communicate with listeners, take calls, sugges- tions and try to understand what they want from TomtheJazzman in addition to what I believe I can offer to them to broaden their knowledge, under- ➤ standing, education and enjoyment of listening. jazzweek.com • December 11, 2006 JazzWeek 10 Radio Q&A: Tom Mallison (continued)

How much programming do you do in advance of the show? I drive about 45 miles to the station each Sunday afternoon to begin a 6 p.m. program. All that is cast inGod stone is the first selection of the evening that I decide while driving to the station. I have boxes of the current releases, new- est releases and classics I always have with me. Input from listeners help me in the direction I take on a specific evening as well as current events. If an art- ist has passed I might dedicate a segment to legacy, also artists that might be involved in television specials like the recent Tony Bennett special. Really, if we talk about ADVANCE, to me that is listening and thinking about the mu- sic prior to driving down to the station. I spend hours each week listening and reading JazzWeek, JazzTimes, Jazziz, Down Beat and email. I am always ex- panding my database, so that I have the most and newest information to share or consider in my programming. What kind of jazz scene is there in Eastern Carolina? What makes it unique? I am at a public radio station that covers most all of Eastern North Carolina. We have quite a few jazz societies: in New Bern, Morehead City, Wilmington and here as FRIENDS of Jazz at East Caro- lina University. There are restaurants that mostly feature jazz only one night a week. The societies bring in top-notch musi- cians. We are close to the Raleigh Dur- ham area so driving up there is very easy to hear performances at Duke, UNC and NC State. We are also not too far form Norfolk, so we can drive up there for nightly events. The many colleges and universities in NC offer great facilities and concert series for good entertainment. Here in Greenville at ECU in the last few Tom Mallison with Tierney Sutton at the Jazz Jounalists Association Awards. years we have had Tierney Sutton, Marcus Roberts, Ray Charles, Maynard Fergu- son, Basie Orchestra, Mark Whitfield, Nicholas Payton, Tony Bennett, Wyn- ton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Dave Brubeck, Terell Stafford, Jon Faddis, Carl Allen, Joey DeFrancisco and the Yellowjackets. Being about five hundred miles from New York City and Atlanta, we are a good stopping off place for traveling musicians. As the first recipient of the Duke Dubois Humanitarian Award, I think a story telling us when the first time you met the man is in order. Probably in the ’80s or late ’70s. I traveled to NYC and met Duke during a JazzTimes Convention at the Hotel Roosevelt. I frequently met Duke at such conventions or at Gavin Conventions. We roomed together and I often stayed with him in his home outside of New York City. He would say why should (continued on page 31) jazzweek.com • December 11, 2006 JazzWeek 11 Jazz Radio

you pay for a hotel room out of your own pocket when you can stay with me at my home or in a hotel when the company was paying for the room in the first place and there was not additional expense of the record company. One time after Gavin we drove up to visit with Neal Sapper in Sonoma. I remember one year after Gavin in San Francisco, Duke, Matt Hughes and I drove down the California coast to L.A. Matt visited music friends and I again stayed with Duke and his son’s family. We had a ball playing with the grandkids and teaching them how to use a new PC Duke had given them for Christmas. I remember Duke’s grandson telling me when I left that I could come back any time and play with him on his computer. Duke was a giving person. He and I often talked about there being two types of peo- ple: GIVERS and TAKERS. I believe we were so close because we both enjoyed giv- ing. When was the last time you saw him? This was after a JazzTimes Convention that was held in New Jersey just outside on NYC in Excursus. After the convention Duke rode with me down to Washington, D.C. We met up with Vinny Valentino for dinner and stayed at the Watergate Ho- tel. We had this giant suite the label had booked and Duke was really ticked off they were spending all that money when they were cutting his allotment of CDs for Tom Mallison catches up with Dr. Billy Taylor in the exhibition hall at the 2006 IAJE radio promotion. The next morning Duke Conference in Manhattan. met up with Diana Krall for interviews at WDCU with Faunee Williams. That was the last time as I drove on to NC and he went back to NYC. As someone who’s finished with his day job, what keeps you working at radio when most others are hitting the golf course or downshifting into a less de- manding schedule? First off, I do not consider it work though it does take up a considerable amount of my time each week. I have been programming jazz radio at the current station, Public Radio East, for over 21 years and in total for 45 years. It is in my DNA and my therapy. I like the interaction with listeners and for the most part they don’t even know who TomtheJazzman is other than a fa- miliar voice on the radio. I believe you should retire to something rather than from something. Radio along with my other volunteer efforts along with two children and one grandson keep me pretty busy. Of course, as most know, I love to travel and always find some jazz along the way like going to NYC the week before Christmas and seeing David “Fathead” Newman and Chris Botti while in the city. There always seems to be some hot button I am working on that is pushing the envelope or outside the nine dots that keeps me on my toes and energized.
