CHRISTMAS, Again and Again What makes it a holiday? by Maggie Beyer
Cookies on a silver tray – The one we take out every year, Shined again with Christmas near; The damask saved for entertaining, Ironed, of course, but who’s complaining;
The glittered star atop the tree, The one you picked when you were three; And packed away within a carton, Ornaments made in kindergarten; Pipecleaner bells without a tone, Made of oldtime styrofoam;
Wooden angels, candy canes, Painted with the family’s names; Magenta balls so carefully saved, From years when flocked trees were the rage; A fragment of a silvery horn, That decked the tree when you were born;
Within the creche, a little lamb, Must stand just so, near Mary’s hand; A banner glued with golden braid, From Sunday School’s second grade; Above the fireplace, with the others, Stockings made by great-grandmothers;
Martha Stewart has her say, House Beautiful hints can point the way; The joy we long for every year, Is to have the same things reappear; What holds the heart, no mystery, As we hang again, our history. December 21, 2000 Page 3
