CHRISTMAS, Again and Again What makes it a holiday? by Maggie Beyer

Cookies on a silver tray – The one we take out every year, Shined again with Christmas near; The damask saved for entertaining, Ironed, of course, but who’s complaining;

The glittered star atop the tree, The one you picked when you were three; And packed away within a carton, Ornaments made in kindergarten; Pipecleaner bells without a tone, Made of oldtime styrofoam;

Wooden angels, candy canes, Painted with the family’s names; Magenta balls so carefully saved, From years when flocked trees were the rage; A fragment of a silvery horn, That decked the tree when you were born;

Within the creche, a little lamb, Must stand just so, near Mary’s hand; A banner glued with golden braid, From Sunday School’s second grade; Above the fireplace, with the others, Stockings made by great-grandmothers;

Martha Stewart has her say, House Beautiful hints can point the way; The joy we long for every year, Is to have the same things reappear; What holds the heart, no mystery, As we hang again, our history. December 21, 2000 Page 3

Toy train enthusiasts--your attention please! Now there is a store especially for you. No more ordering on line or traveling long distances to get your model Lionels. A new store has opened in New Buffalo called I Love Toy Trains-the Store. Owners Tom and Charyl McComas has everything you need ready for the holidays. Small boy and toy trains--they just naturally go together. Big man and toy trains-now we’re talking money and a lifetime commitment. Tom McComas wasn’t really interested in toy trains when he was living in Chicago and a friend gave him four boxes of old trains in lieu of a monetary debt. A year later, Tom relates, someone was over for dinner who happened to be a train collector. When he saw Tom’s collection, he offered him $9,500. Not a bad exchange for a $5,000 debt! And that, Tom said, is when he became interested in toy trains. Tom McComas and his 3-year old son, Jeffrey, who was the inspiration for “I Love Toy Trains.” Tom has been producing film and video for over thir- ty years. He has produced shows for Lionel, Caterpillar, Mattel, Dept. 56 and other companies that produce toys. Because their studio was filled with lots and lots of props, his wife, Charyl, suggested opening a store and selling all the stuff. The name of their store “I Love Toy Trains--The Store” is based on the title of the popular children’s video series created by Tom. He relates, “When our son, Jeffrey, was three, the only time he would sit still was to watch me edit train videos, so I put together a special tape for him that included trains, music, big machines, bloop- ers, and other stuff. He loved. it. Watched it over The best-selling toy train every produced--The Lionel Sante Fe F-3. and over. Charyl said, ‘If Jeff likes it so much maybe Introduced in 1947, this handsome red and silver engine is the engine other kids will too’.” most people think of when you mention Lionel.

Videos 7 and 8 are now available in the popular “I Love Toy Trains” series by Tom McComas.

Clockwork models include the high quality Schuco race cars. Schuco, a German company, is to wind-up cars what Lionel is to toy trains. Tom and Charyl took the pilot to a video show in Las Vegas and it was a hit. “We received orders from Blockbuster, catalogs like Wireless, Book-of-the Month The Lights of Liberty Club, libraries, Toys-R-Us. It was just amazing.” Seven more shows have been produced since and the series has sold almost a million copies, the most Carousel Shoppe ever for an independently produced children’s series. Fine Gifts & Collectibles Tom has also written over twenty books and pro- duced over fifty titles, mostly on toy trains. In the late Dreamsicles • Lefton • Lighthouses 70’s he co-authored a six-volume, hardcover series: Lionel: A Collector, a Guide & History. We want every woman to be aware that new, highly-sophisticated technology is coming very soon to the Center for Breast Health at St. Anthony Memorial. It’s the R2 ImageChecker TM M1000 System. ImageChecker is a computer-aided detection system which aids radiologists in reading routine mammograms. After the radiologist interprets the mammogram x-rays, the computer system double- checks them, identifying areas that may warrant a second look. The powerful technology makes a billion calculations for each x-ray film! ImageChecker is FDA-approved. ImageChecker is an excellent diagnostic tool in the hands of our experienced team. Board-certified radiologist Esther Lee, MD, who is the Director of Mammography at the Center for Breast Health, says, “The R2 ImageChecker will help radiologists in detecting breast cancer at an earlier stage. Finding breast cancer early means increased survival and good outcomes for women in our community.” We think you’ll agree that ImageChecker is a valuable community health enhancement. We urge all women to take advantage of it by having their regularly- scheduled mammo- grams. Call the Center for Breast Health at 219/877-1980 today to make your appointment.

Friends are like a river, Always flowing always there, The classroom was fixed by the students with care, In hopes that vacation soon would be there. Friends flow like a river, The children were sitting all snug in their seats, Taking unexpected paths, With visions of “A’s” on their grade report sheets. But looking for you around the bends, The dividers were opened by the students en masse, The bends and trials of life, And they had just settled in for another long class, When over the speaker was heard such a noise, Expecting you to be there, In know it just had to be my girls and boys. Like they were for you, Away to the office I flew like a shot. Be there for your friends, Was it Mussa, Byrnes, or Rodecap they had got? And they will be there for you. But when I arrived not a sound could be heard; As a matter of fact, not one single word! —-Jamie Wroblewski

When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But Bobillo and Spellman and Crum being led by the ear! Mrs. Breen looked angry. She’d make this one stick, So I thought to myself, I’d better do something quick!

More rapid than eagles, the students they came, And she whistled and shouted and called them by name! Three of the Same “Now Arvin! Now Bowen! Now Gannon! Now Gonzalez! On Johnson! On Juricic! On McCotter! Three stand apart, Now Miles! Now Mosier! Now Seizys!” Two never met, Yet all the same. “Back to your classroom and back to your books! Now do as I say with no dirty looks!” Three stand near But as we departed, she gave me a wink, And the look on my face made me start to think. Only two friends Yet all the same. “Back into the classroom,” Mrs Breen did say, :I’ve got nothing to tell; No, nothing to say!” Three stand together, But the questions kept coming - What had they done? All is silent. “Not much…” “Oh, nothing…” “Just having some fun…” Yet all the same. Jankowski and Meyer kept prying, though they hadn’t a clue! I said, “Let’s all start to think when I give you the cue!” Three stand together, So then I did give it and we started to think. One takes a chance, You could almost hear Althoff’s, Leiby’s, and Benson’s and even Yet all the same. Westbrook’s and Stanford’s brains go “clink”!

We all had our theories with which we did fiddle, Three talk for there must be an answer to this puzzling riddle. Three listen, so I grinned to myself as I saw the light, All the same. For the key is the thought behind Christmas night! Three all met The thought is the Key! That is what counts! All now friends Whether it comes in large, medium, or very small counts!
