Porsche Events

3 February 2018 to 27 January 2019, The Porsche Effect at the Petersen Automotive Museum

The Petersen Automotive Museum is developing an exhibit called The Porsche Effect that will be on view from February 3, 2018 to January 27, 2019. We have been working alongside Porsche Cars North America and have recently connected with PCA.

PCA and the larger extended family of Porsche owners and enthusiasts will be explored in the exhibit’s Extended Family section which will include a Club Coupe and artifacts from the PCA archive. We were hoping that you could help us learn more about Zone 8’s history and determine additional ways that we can collaborate with the local Porsche community.

29 June-2 July 2018, 968 West Coast Gathering

There will be a gathering of 968 owners this summer in Sonora, CA, June 29th to July 2nd. Sonora is located on historic CA Highway 49, at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains! Think Winding Mountain Roads!

In the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills, in the heart of California’s “Gold Country” lies Sonora, named after the miners from Sonora Mexico who settled the City in 1848. Known as the “Queen of the Southern Mines”, Sonora still holds onto its historic downtown charm while thriving as the commercial, government and cultural center for the region. This should be a great base for scenic drives, social time with fellow 968’ers and exploring the local region!

For those who made the 968 Gathering in S. Lake Tahoe, this is a little southwest of that and we will have an opportunity to enjoy some of the same styles of roads and scenery! Stops are being planned at several nearby historical venues.

sgvr.pca.org 14 of 76 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 19 June 2018

The base hotel is the Sonoran Inn (http://www.thesonorainn.com/) with discount rates of between $135-$145 per night; depending on room type. There are other higher-priced hotels/inns/B&Bs and some lower-priced lodging to suit all pocketbooks and tastes. One caution, there are no first floor rooms at the hotel and the elevator is under repair and may not be operational. If this is a concern, they have an adjacent property with first floor rooms that you can book.

Make your reservations no later than May 29th to check-in on Friday, June 29th and check-out on Monday, July 2nd

The block of rooms will be released after May 29th.

Ask for the “Porsche Club 968” special rates. Reservations should be direct to the hotel at 209-532-2400

12-15 September, Treffen Banff

The members of the Wild Rose Region and the Treffen North America staff invite you to attend Treffen Banff in the breathtaking Canadian Rockies within Banff National Park over September 12 – 15, 2018.

The headquarters hotel for this event is the historic Fairmont Banff Springs, a landmark in the picturesque alpine town of Banff, Alberta. Built during the 19th century as one of Canada’s grand railway hotels, the Fairmont Banff Springs is known as Canada’s “Castle in the Rockies” and has been providing legendary hospitality to their guests for more than 125 years.

The primary reason for touring this fairytale Canadian oasis is the awe-inspiring mountain vistas and scenic drives throughout Banff National Park. Driving routes like the world-famous Icefields Parkway offer access to dizzying mountains, hanging lakes and glaciers. And be sure to watch for elusive wildlife along the way as you never know when a curious elk might wander onto the road.

Registration opens Wednesday, 13 June 2018.

Porsche Unveils Official Poster for Rennsport Reunion VI

From Porsche Newsroom, 13 June 2018

Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) today unveiled the artwork commissioned to represent Rennsport Reunion VI, the sixth iteration of the world’s largest gathering of all generations of Porsche race cars and their drivers.

sgvr.pca.org 43 of 76 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 19 June 2018

The four-day “family reunion” takes place September 27-30 at legendary WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca near Monterey, California. Posters for past Rennsport Reunions quickly became collector’s items.

Nearly 60,000 people came to Laguna Seca for the previous Rennsport Reunion in 2015. It is the world's largest gathering of vintage and contemporary Porsche race cars, those who have driven and engineered them, and fans. Hosted by PCNA, Rennsport Reunion VI will again feature the widest variety of historic racing models in competition as Porsche celebrates the 70th anniversary this year of its first sports car.

Official Poster This year’s event will honor the full pantheon of Porsche motorsport champions, and the poster depicts three of the most significant players: the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring-winning Type 718 RS 60, the first overall endurance race winner from Porsche; the 2008 RS Spyder which famously punched above its weight by winning races overall in the American Le Mans Series in the (LMP2) class; and the 959 Group B rally car, which after winning the grueling 6,200 mile Paris-Dakar off-road rally in 1986 went on to become the world’s fastest production street-legal road car.

The painting is the work of renowned automotive artist Dennis Simon, who created four of the previous five Reunion posters. Earlier works show off the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning 917 K; the recent Le Mans-winning Porsche 919 Hybrid and LMP1 WEC Champion; and the 356 SL that won its class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1951 (all on the 2015 poster); the 1981 factory 935 long-tail, dubbed Moby Dick, in Martini colors, and Al Holbert’s 911 RSR from 1974 (2011); the incredible 917 and 962 in Gulf and Löwenbräu liveries (2007); and the three 908s crossing the finish line of the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona (2004).

Tesla Is Cutting About 9% of Workers on Musk's Profitability Push

From Bloomberg, by Dana Hull, June 12, 2018, 10:52 AM PDT, Updated on June 12, 2018, 4:19 PM PDT

 Electric-car maker to dismiss about 9% of workforce, CEO says  Firings follow bungled first attempt to mass-produce a sedan

Elon Musk has finally been forced to rethink his vaulting ambitions for Tesla Inc.

sgvr.pca.org 46 of 76 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 19 June 2018

The news Tuesday that Musk will dismiss more than 3,000 employees, or about 9 percent of the company’s workforce, underscored what many on Wall Street have been saying for months: Tesla has reached a pivotal moment. After misjudging how quickly the carmaker would be able to mass- manufacture an electric vehicle for the first time, the chief executive officer is pumping the brakes from years of hiring at breakneck speed.

The biggest job cut in Tesla’s 15-year history underscores the pressure Musk is under to stop burning through money -- and start making some. So far, the company has cumulatively lost about $5.4 billion, and even most optimists don’t believe the red ink will end there. The carmaker may lose another $1.3 billion over the next four quarters, according to analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Read Elon Musk’s Internal Memo to Tesla Employees

The announcement crystallized a restructuring Musk first alluded to when he tore into analysts who questioned Tesla’s financial straits early last month. While the CEO has steadfastly ruled out the need to raise more money this year, the company has about $1.2 billion in convertible bonds maturing through early 2019. Those obligations, combined with operating costs, may necessitate a more than $2 billion injection this year, Moody’s Investors Service said in March when it downgraded Tesla’s credit rating.

“We still have reservations on Tesla shares given production challenges, competitive threats intensifying as well as balance sheet obligations with debt quickly coming due,” Jeff Osborne, an analyst at Cowen & Co., wrote in an email. The job cuts reflect Musk’s “sudden, new-found commitment to hitting profitability,” he said.

The across-the-board cutbacks, which almost entirely involve salaried workers at Tesla’s California headquarters and beyond, are an admission that Musk’s ambition has at times exceeded the financial realities of building a car company from scratch.

In addition to spending more on righting ship with the Model 3 sedan, the company will have to shell out billions of dollars to build new car and battery factories in China and Europe -- not to mention on delivering a new crossover, sports car and semi truck in the coming years. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analysts said last month that Tesla may need to tap capital markets for more than $10 billion in funding by 2020.

“Given that Tesla has never made an annual profit in the almost 15 years since we have existed, profit is obviously not what motivates us,” Musk wrote in an internal email Tuesday. “What drives us is our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable, clean energy, but we will never achieve that mission unless we eventually demonstrate that we can be sustainably profitable. That is a valid and fair criticism of Tesla’s history to date.”

Tesla shares pared an earlier gain of as much as 6.9 percent and closed up 3.2 percent at $342.77. Since it started trading in 2010, the stock has risen at a blistering pace driven by optimism that Tesla would lead a new era of transportation innovation. In the past 12 months, amid production snags and debt-

sgvr.pca.org 47 of 76 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 19 June 2018 related jitters, shares have fallen 4.5 percent, while Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. have climbed.

No production associates are included in the job cuts, and Tesla’s ability to reach its Model 3 targets in the coming months won’t be affected, Musk wrote. He said Tesla’s rapid growth in recent years led to duplicated roles and jobs the company could no longer justify. Tesla ended last year with more than 37,500 employees, 12 times its headcount five years earlier.

In addition to carrying out the staff reorganization, Tesla won’t renew a residential sales agreement with Home Depot Inc. and will focus instead on selling solar power in its own stores and online, Musk wrote. That’s a reversal from earlier this year, when Tesla-branded selling spaces started rolling out at 800 Home Depot locations.

Mass job cuts aren’t completely unheard of at Tesla. The company dismissed about 700 people last year who Musk said failed to meet annual performance reviews. SolarCity’s workforce also was significantly pared back amid Tesla’s acquisition of the company in 2016. It finished that year with about 3,000 fewer employees than it had at the end of 2015.

The latest firings may lead Tesla to take a charge of as much as $150 million for the quarter ending this month, Gene Munster, a managing partner at venture capital firm Loup Ventures, wrote to clients Tuesday. The move could save the company about $80 million a quarter in operating expenses going forward.

“In the context of the company’s high cash burn rate, $80M per quarter may not sound like enough to have an impact,” Munster said. “But as the next several months may decide the fate of the company, every dollar counts.”

Tesla will provide significant salary and vesting stock to employees being dismissed, Musk wrote in his memo. One employee who didn’t want to be identified said Tesla offered to pay his salary until mid- August and health and stock vesting until early September.

“I would like to thank everyone who is departing Tesla for their hard work over the years,” Musk said. “I’m deeply grateful for your many contributions to our mission. It is very difficult to say goodbye.”

2019 718 Porsche Boxster Spyder spied with the roof down

From autoblog, by Joel Stocksdale, Jun 11th 2018 at 3:08 PM

Now that we're entering summer, the weather has become ideal for convertible driving, and Porsche testers seem to agree. A 2019 718 Boxster Spyder was spotted testing with its complex — but lightweight — soft top lowered.

While the new pictures don't offer any major revelations about the car, there are a few details to behold in addition to its sleek silhouette. We do get a better look at the forward part of the engine cover. It looks very much like the last version, with humps that rise nearly to the height of the plastic hoops behind the seats. Between the seats are a tiny little wind blocker, and there's a short panel that spans

sgvr.pca.org 49 of 76 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 19 June 2018 between the humps to house the third brake light. Also like the old model, the black plastic areas where the top clamps down appear to have "Spyder" badging, but the badges are covered by black tape.

As with previously seen Spyder prototypes, this 718 has the new black taillights with slim LEDs inside. It also has a GTS front bumper and a rear bumper with a much more aggressive diffuser and separated dual-exhaust tips.

Rumor has it that this Spyder will continue to use a naturally aspirated flat-six, rather than a high-output version of the standard 718 Boxster's turbocharged flat-four. This is also supported by the fact the next Cayman GT4 will have a naturally aspirated engine. Exactly which six-cylinder will be used is the question, since it could be an updated version of the old 3.8-liter engine, or it could use a detuned 4.0- liter engine from the 911 GT3.

Man allegedly crashes his brother’s Ferrari into two parked cars in Weymouth, MA

From The Boston Globe, By Emily Sweeney Globe Staff, June 13, 2018

Weymouth Police Department

A 50-year-old man crashed his brother's Ferrari into this parked vehicle Tuesday night.

A 50-year-old man with a revoked license and “an extensive driving history” drove his brother’s Ferrari into two parked cars in Weymouth Tuesday night, according to police.

The crash occurred just after 9 p.m., and police found the red 1995 Ferrari pinned underneath the rear end of an SUV that was parked in a driveway on East Street.

According to the police report, John Distasio was found sitting in the driver’s seat of the Ferrari, and he was bleeding. He told police that he’d been going 40 miles per hour and lost control of the vehicle as he was changing gears.

sgvr.pca.org 51 of 76 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 19 June 2018

Police determined that the Ferrari had crossed the double yellow line into the other lane of traffic, then went over the sidewalk, spun around, and crashed through a fence before slamming into the red 2009 Hyundai Elantra and gray 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe that were parked in the driveway of 324 East St., the report said. Both vehicles were unoccupied at the time.

Weymouth Police Department

Police estimated the Ferrari to be traveling at a speed in excess of 45 miles per hour, and the posted speed limit on that road is 30 miles per hour, the report said.

Distasio suffered multiple facial injuries and was taken to South Shore Hospital for treatment. Police followed up with Distasio at the hospital and issued him a citation for operating with a revoked license; negligent operation of a motor vehicle; speeding; wanton destruction of property over $250; and a marked lanes violation.

Pacific Coast Highway to Re-Open 31 July 2018

From Caltrans QuickMap, 14 July 2018

Pacific Coast Highway has been closed by a landslide between Gorda and Ragged Point since 20 May 2017 but should open by the end of July.

From quickmap.dot.ca.gov Pacific Coast Highway south of Big Sur to reopen by end of July, officials say From Los Angeles Times, by Hailey Branson-Potts Jun 13, 2018 | 9:20 AM

A scenic stretch of Highway 1 in Monterey County that was buried last year by a massive landslide will reopen by the end of July, according to the California Department of Transportation.

The Pacific Coast Highway has been closed at Mud Creek for 14 months. On May 20, 2017, a slide in the middle of the night — the largest landslide ever recorded on the Big Sur coast — covered a third of a mile of the highway and buried it beneath 40 feet of dirt and rock. The slide also added 15 acres to California’s picturesque coastline.

sgvr.pca.org 54 of 76 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 19 June 2018

The new quarter-mile highway will run over the landslide and “will be buttressed with a series of embankments, berms, rocks, netting, culverts and other stabilizing material,” Caltrans said in a statement.

The agency said building atop the landslide was cheaper and quicker than other options, like building a tunnel.

It's official: #Hwy1 at Mud Creek south of #BigSur will RE-OPEN by end of July. Big thanks to John Madonna Construction for tireless repair work & the SLO County north coast that's been impacted by the largest slide ever in Big Sur. We are on the road, literally, to recovery!

The highway construction has cost about $54 million. The new target date is nearly two months sooner than anticipated. Last month, Caltrans officials said the agency was aiming to reopen the roadway by mid-September.

“Rebuilding Highway 1 and restoring traffic along the Big Sur coast has been our priority, and by opening the highway sooner than expected, it will boost the many central coast communities affected by this major landslide,” Richard Rosales, acting director for Caltrans District 5, said in a statement.

The reopening date could be reevaluated in early July, officials said.

Once the highway reopens, there could still be intermittent weekday lane closures and roadwork for several months to finalize repairs, according to Caltrans.

Porsche celebrates double victory at Le Mans 24-hour marathon

Porsche Press Release, 17 June 2018

Race, World Endurance Championship WEC, 2nd round at Le Mans / France Stuttgart. Porsche has once again made history and won both GTE classes at the world’s toughest long distance race. In the pro-category, the Porsche 911 RSR with the starting number 92 concluded the 86th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours in first place after 344 laps. The driver trio Kévin Estre (France), Laurens

6 Two came with eight cylinder engines.

Vanthoor (Belgium) and Michael Christensen (Denmark) held the lead for almost the entire distance and controlled the race on the tradition-steeped 13.626-kilometre racetrack. The works drivers crowned their flawless performance with class victory number 106 for Porsche.

The GTE Pro Class Winning “Pink Pig” # 92 Porsche 911 RSR @PorscheRaces

The sister car (#91) shared by Richard Lietz (Austria), Frédéric Makowiecki (France) and Gianmaria Bruni (Italy) perfectly rounded off the double victory for Porsche in the GTE-Pro class. Frédéric Makowiecki provided a special highlight. The Frenchman fought an epic duel with a competitor for an hour and a half, fending off all attacks to claim second place. With these two triumphs at the 24-hour marathon in France, Porsche has extended its lead in the drivers’ and manufacturers’ classifications of the FIA WEC world championship.

Technical problems with the #93 nine-eleven threw the car far behind during the night. Patrick Pilet (France), Earl Bamber (New Zealand) and Nick Tandy (Great Britain) lost 25 minutes due to repairs and

sgvr.pca.org 60 of 76 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 19 June 2018 ultimately finished on eleventh. For Romain Dumas (France), Timo Bernhard and Sven Müller (both Germany), the race was over after seven hours. Their car (#94) retired in the night with suspension damage. The #77 Porsche fielded by Dempsey-Proton Racing celebrated an impressive win in the GTE-Am class. Putting in an inspired drive, Porsche Young Professional Matt Campbell (Australia), Christian Ried (Germany) and Porsche Junior Julien Andlauer (France) notched up the 107th class win for Porsche. At just 18 years of age, Julien Andlauer has become the youngest class winner at Le Mans.

While the second car fielded by the Dempsey-Proton Racing team (#88) was sidelined with suspension damage, the 510 hp 911 (#99) run by Proton Competition narrowly missed out on a podium spot in fourth place. The Porsche 911 RSR with the starting number 80 (Ebimotors) and 56 (Team Project 1) finished the Le Mans 24-hour marathon on sixth and seventh respectively. The vehicle campaigned by Gulf Racing (#86) was relegated to the back of the field at the beginning of the race after becoming entangled in an accident caused by another competitor. Pulling out all stops, the team fought their way back up the order to finish on tenth.

Comments on the race Dr Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board: “An absolutely perfect weekend for Porsche. You can’t wish for more than this in our anniversary year. It’s impossible to plan such a thing, but when it happens it’s an indescribable feeling. Congratulations to the drivers, the teams and all the employees who made this success possible. It makes me very proud.”

Oliver Blume, CEO of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG: “We prepared meticulously for this race and have worked towards this for months. The entire team did a perfect job. We’re incredibly proud of this double victory in the GTE-Pro class and of winning the amateur classification. This is a fantastic achievement from our employees. Porsche belongs to Le Mans and Le Mans belongs to Porsche.”

Michael Steiner, Research and Development at Porsche: “The Porsche 911 is and remains the best sports car in the world – it’s a true racer. It doesn’t get better than scoring a double victory in the GTE- Pro class and victory in the GTE-Am class on our 70th birthday. This year we’re back at the front and that’s where we belong.”

Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars: “It’s a sensation. What a crazy fight out there on the track and a flawless performance from the team. That was an incredible feat, which we ultimately turned into a deserved victory. The class wins are a perfect gift for our 70th anniversary. The fact that we earned maximum points towards the world championship rounds off the whole result. Now the suspense has turned to joy.”

Pascal Zurlinden, Director GT Factory Motorsport: “We got a perfect lap in qualifying and the result of today’s race has crowned a perfect weekend. Victory in the GTE-Pro and GTE-Am class underlines that we’re doing everything right at Porsche in both factory and customer sport. We were able to extend our

sgvr.pca.org 61 of 76 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 19 June 2018 lead in the manufacturers’ classification and we also moved into the lead of the drivers’ category. All in all, a perfect day.”

Kévin Estre (Porsche 911 RSR #92): “It’s simply unbelievable. I just can’t describe my feelings. Today is the best day of my life. We have won the world’s most difficult and wonderful race. That can’t be put into words.”

Michael Christensen (Porsche 911 RSR #92): “It was an incredible race, I don’t know what to say. The car was fast right from the start. We had a little luck during a safety car phase and we managed to pull clear of the field a little. From that point on we focussed on extending our lead. In the final third of the race we simply tried to avoid taking any risks and bring the car home safely. This worked perfectly.”

Laurens Vanthoor (Porsche 911 RSR #92): “Today is one of the most beautiful, no, the most beautiful days of my career: I’ve won Le Mans. I can’t describe my emotions and I still can’t believe it. Kevin, Michael and I complemented each other perfectly. The entire team was just brilliant today.”

Frédéric Makowiecki (Porsche 911 RSR #91): “Our car was very fast, but we simply couldn’t keep up with our sister car, which was incredibly consistent. For over an hour I battled hard with a competitor for second place. That makes my job as a race driver really fun, but we couldn’t make up ground in this phase. I’m thrilled for the team with our second place at Le Mans. We’ll be back next year to fight for victory.”

Gianmaria Bruni (Porsche 911 RSR #91): “This double victory is fantastic – for Porsche and our team. We had a great race and a great fight with our #92 sister car. We tried everything but our team colleagues didn’t make any mistakes and they deserve this win.”

Richard Lietz (Porsche 911 RSR #91): “Today is a banner day for Porsche – this double win is a wonderful gift for the 70th anniversary. It was a great race, and it doesn’t get much better than first and second place. This shows that GT racing is the future and we need to invest in it.”

Nick Tandy (Porsche 911 RSR #93): “It’s disappointing, of course, not to be further ahead. But we accept the good races with the bad. It was great to see that our car’s pace was good and we could match the frontrunners. Unfortunately, technical problems threw us back considerably. It just wasn’t our race this year.”

Earl Bamber (Porsche 911 RSR #93): “Unfortunately we lost precious time swapping out an alternator and we couldn’t regain that time. But I’m really pleased for Laurens Vanthoor. We share a cockpit in the IMSA Weathertech. In two weeks, two Le Mans winners will climb into the cockpit at Watkins Glen.”

Patrick Pilet (Porsche 911 RSR #93): “It was a difficult race. At times we were running with the leaders and had a very fast car. But a technical problem then threw us down the field. We were determined to finish the race and we finished on eleventh. But that’s how it is at Le Mans. We’ll try again next year.”

Jörg Bergmeister (Porsche 911 RSR #56): “We experienced a race of mixed fortunes. At one point things looked really promising for us and we were within striking distance of second place. However,

sgvr.pca.org 62 of 76 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 19 June 2018 unfortunately we were hampered by brake problems towards the end of the race and fell back. But we’ve gained a lot of valuable experience, which will help us in the future.”

Julien Andlauer (Porsche 911 RSR #77): “At 18 years of age I was given the chance to contest Le Mans for the first time and then we won. I’m very proud of the whole team and I can’t really believe it yet. Now I’m the youngest Le Mans winner, incredible.”

Christina Nielsen (Porsche 911 RSR #80): “Sixth place is a very good result, because this was our first time at Le Mans. We worked hard and made very few mistakes. I’m very proud of the whole team. We will improve and hopefully be back next year to compete.”

Ben Barker (Porsche 911 RSR #86): “Unfortunately we couldn’t bring home the result we wanted after 24 hours. The car was very fast over the entire race distance, even after our accident. The team did a brilliant job and made no mistakes. The accident at the start was simply bad luck.”

Matteo Cairoli (Porsche 911 RSR #88): “I’m very disappointed that we retired. The suspension broke and I couldn’t save the car unfortunately. It was a blessing in disguise that it didn’t happen in a high- speed passage on the track. Then things could have been a lot different.”

Patrick Long (Porsche 911 RSR #99): “It was great fun driving the car here. I particularly enjoyed the night stints. The lights on the new 911 RSR are a great development. We’re very pleased about our sister car’s victory in the GTE-Pro class.”

Patrick Dempsey, co-owner Dempsey-Proton Racing: “I’m lost for words. Everyone did a fantastic job, it was a victory for the whole team. The race was incredible, we made no mistakes and our work was rewarded with this great success. I can’t tell you how incredibly proud and happy I am for Porsche, too.”

Audi chief Rupert Stadler arrested in diesel emissions probe

The chief executive of German carmaker Audi, Rupert Stadler, has been arrested in connection with an investigation into the diesel emissions scandal.

A spokesman for Volkswagen, which owns Audi, confirmed he was being held.

Munich prosecutors said they had acted because of a risk that Mr Stadler might seek to suppress evidence.

The scandal erupted three years ago, when it emerged that cars had been fitted with devices designed to cheat emissions tests.

The devices were initially found in VW's cars, but its Audi subsidiary has also been embroiled in the scandal.

Last month, it admitted that another 60,000 A6 and A7 models with diesel engines have emission software issues.

That is on top of the 850,000 recalled last year by Audi, of which only some have been found to require modification.

The so-called dieselgate emissions scandal first came to light in September 2015.

Volkswagen admitted that nearly 600,000 cars sold in the US were fitted with "defeat devices" designed to circumvent emissions tests.

The carmaker said it had installed software in 11 million diesel cars worldwide that could tell when they were being tested and cut their emissions.

On the open road, untested, the level of emissions would in practice be far higher - up to 40 times as bad as recorded under laboratory conditions.
