1 Cougar Basketball UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

Founded in 1964 by the Church of the Nazarene, Mount Vernon Nazarene University held its first classes in October of 1968 on the former Lakeholm farm in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The land was purchased by public subscription and donated to the university. With an enrollment of around 2,200 students, MVNU is the official university of the East Central Educational Region of the Church of the Nazarene. The primary responsibility for sponsorship and support of the university is charged to the Nazarene congregations in Ohio, West Virginia, and the eastern half of Kentucky. The aspiration of the university is that academic and student life activities be integrated in a Wesleyan holiness tradition to facilitate character, value, and cultural development to improve the quality of life. This is expressed in the motto: "To seek to learn is to seek to serve." The university offers more than 80 academic programs and a full range of pre-professional programs while granting associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. MVNU offers 11 intercollegiate sports (men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s , men’s and women’s basketball, , , and men’s and women’s ), and students can take part in an active intramural program. The Campus

The MVNU campus consists of 400 tree-filled acres on the Lakeholm farm. The gently rolling fields, bordered on the rear by the Kokosing River, constitute a campus of natural beauty. The university buildings are of Williamsburg colonial design blending well with the site and complementing Mount Vernon's reputation as "Ohio's Colonial City." Four dorms (Pioneer, Oakwood, Galloway, and Redwood) and seven apartment complexes (Maplewood, Elmwood, Rosewood, Cedar, Birch, Spruce, and Cypress) provide quality living quarters for residential students. Major buildings include: Faculty, Founders, and Regents Halls (three large classroom buildings), the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Fine Arts Complex, the Jetter School of Business, the Hyson Campus Center, the Lakeholm Administration Building, the Physical Education Center, Donoho Recreation Center, and Prince Student Union, the Thorne Library/Learning Resource Center, and the Jennie K. Moore Family and Consumer Science Building. The university also holds classes in the Buchwald Center and Hunter Hall in downtown Mount Vernon as well. 2 Cougar Basketball UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

The Lady Cougars have a talented group of returners and eight new players on the roster who will make their collegiate debut. MVNU will look to bounce back from a 5-22 season that was slowed by a rash of inju- ries to some key players in 2013-14. The Lady Cougars are looking to turn the page this season with a young, but very talented roster. “I think we are going to be different than what we were last year,” said MVNU Head Coach Jason Foster who is entering his fourth season. “We have a lot more depth and we are coming in healthy. The depth has generated a lot more competition in practice and I think that is going to be beneficial to us as we go into the season.” MVNU lost one player to graduation and that was leading scorer Amy Daniels who paced the team with 15.9 points per game. In addition, she was second on the team in rebounding at 7.6 boards per night. The good news is that the team returns all of the other top scorers from last year, includ- ing sophomore Meg Beidelman. Beidelman was second on the team in scoring at 15.7 points per game and led the Lady Cougars in rebounding (7.7 RPG) and total blocked shots (19). Beidelman was named Crossroads League Co-Freshman of the Year and was a member of the Crossroads League All-Freshman Team. She was also recognized at the national level by the NCCAA with a spot on East Region Second Team. Senior Erica Cramer, who had her season cut short after five games last year due to an injury, is back at 100 percent this season. In her limited time on the floor in 2013-14, Cramer aver- aged 14.4 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per night. Kate Walls enters her sophomore season in an MVNU uniform after a very effective freshman campaign. Walls started 27 games last season and averaged 8.8 points per game from the guard position. Seniors Ainsleigh Krause and Courtney Christie are key returners to the team for the 2014-15 season. Krause averaged 7.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while Chris- tie posted an average of 6.2 points per contest. Christies led the team in assists with 116 in 26 games played. Coach Foster and his staff hit the recruiting trail hard in the offseason and brought in a talented group of newcomers to this year’s team. Natalie Carpenter comes to MVNU by way of Johnstown-Monroe High School where set the all-time career scoring record with 1,515 points. She was a 1st Team All-State selection and District II Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014. Tory Minton enters her first season at MVNU after a great high school career at Utica High School. Minton recorded 1,161 career points and holds the school records for most points in a game and 3-pointers in a season. Minton also has the most 3-pointers in school history as well. Sophie Kinnard joins the Lady Cougars by way of Tyler Consolidated High School in Friendly, West Virginia. Kinnard eclipsed 1,000 career points and earned numerous in honors in both basketball and soccer. In 2013 she was a Wendy’s Heisman West Virginia State Finalist and garnered multiple awards at the conference level. Sierra Basista is a local recruit from Mount Vernon High School and will help bolster the roster in 2014-15. Basista averaged 12 points and 4.2 assists per game as a senior last year. She hit 38 percent of her three point shots and 70 percent of her free throws. She was a 2014 1st Team OCC and 1st Team All-District selection. Makenzie Spang joins high school teammate Natalie Carpenter on the 2014-15 roster at MVNU. Spang anchored the post at Johnstown-Monroe where she averaged 11.1 points per game and is the school’s all-time leader in blocked shots and rebounds. Emily Yoder comes to MVNU from a renowned high school program in Berlin Hiland where she helped lead the team to a pair of second place finishes in the Ohio State High School tournament. She is 6th all-time in school history in both career assists (258) and steals with 236. She averaged 6.6 points per game and three assists per contest. 15 Cougar Basketball 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW The Lady Cougars schedule features non-conference contests against the University of Northwestern Ohio, Shawnee State University, Lourdes University, University of Rio Grande, Uni- versity of Michigan-Dearborn, Rochester College, Kent State-Tuscarawas, Cedarville University, and Ohio Christian University. In conference play, MVNU will play a home and away contest against each of the other nine Crossroads League teams that includes defending NAIA Division II national champion University of Saint Francis. Indiana Wesleyan University, Taylor (Ind.) University, Marian (Ind.) University, Huntington (Ind.) University, Grace (Ind.) College, Bethel (Ind.) College, Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, and Goshen (Ind.) College will all battle with the Lady Cougars for the confer- ence title and a spot in the eight-team Crossroads League Tournament at the end of the season. “The Crossroads League conference is tough and there is never an off day or guaran- teed win in this league,” Foster said. “If you don’t bring it every single game you are going to get beat and it doesn’t matter if it’s the first place team or the last place team, it’s the way that our conference is talent wise from top to bottom.” “We have talent on this team and a key for us will be getting everybody comfortable with each other and to trust each other on the court,” Foster added. “Every one of the players on the team is used to logging significant minutes in a game, but we have the depth to play a lot of different players. The big thing for us will be the ability to blend this big mix of talented players into a finely tuned machine.”

Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped forward to address the important issues of the day – be it racial integration in the ‘40s and ‘50s or establishing the first women’s championship program in 1980. The NAIA has not been afraid to enact changes while others have watched and waited. The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team moved into brand new, state-of-the-art Ariel Arena on November 5, 2013 with a 111-103 triple overtime loss to University of Northwestern Ohio. Ariel Arena features three full-sized athletic courts with a center court that has ‘horseshoe’ seating. The arena seats 2,020 people including 144 ‘VIP’ seats with backs and arm rests at center court on the home side, which has all chair back seating. It can also accommodate up to 3,000 people for a concert or graduation. There is a spacious lobby area that overlooks the arena and features the Cougar Wall of Fame display and other athletic honors, and there are two concessions stands – located at each end of the court on the concourse level. There are also designated broadcast booths for both home and visiting radio/video broadcasts, and there are expanded home locker rooms for the MVNU men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams as well as locker rooms for visiting teams and officials. All of the athletic department coaches and staff and the physical education department faculty have offices in the new facility along with an athletic training center and three classrooms. Expanded cardio fitness and weight rooms are available for the entire campus community, and a special event banquet hall will seat up to 225 people.
