This project was for the construction of the Shatin approach to the Shing Mun Tunnels, part of the Route 5 Expressway linking Shatin and Tsuen Wan.
The 2km long expressway beings at Tai Po Road near the KCR Shatin Station and rises on a 13 span elevated viaduct over the railway line and Tai Po Road to an abutment halfway along the route to the tunnel portals.
The major works consisted of : a 2.2km dual 2-lane truck road cut and fill road platform and 340m of retaining wall site formation access roads, footpaths, cycle tracks culverts and landscaping
HIGHLIGHTS :
One km of transparent noise barriers, 1 to 2m in height, was built along the expressway near Mei Lam Estate to minimize noise disturbance to the local residents.
There was a high degree of complexity in the construction of crossheads of various sizes. Two main types of falsework in shoreframe and structural steelwork were specially designed and used in the project.
A total of 486 precast post-tensioned concrete U-beams were manufactured on site with lifting gantries and transportation equipment designed in house. A wide range of beam lengths added to the complexity. Special gantries were purposely designed and built by the company for lifting and placing precast beams weighting 65 tonnes.
