Kwun Tong

Chapter 2

wun Tong was not developed before the 1950s. It was K uncultivated and, like Ngau Chi Wan, was just a small village. The areas around Amoy Garden in Ngau Tau Kok were simply muddy paths. Mr. Hau Shui Pui of the Council recalls that in the past was a beach. Many fishermen came to sell their catches. Squatters were particularly abundant in this district, fires and landslides often occurred. The government started systematic development planning in the 1950s and Kwun Tong soon became an industrial area. In the 1960s a variety of industries flourished such as plastics, garments and toys. In order to encourage progress, CLP put great effort into the development of this new and large industrial area.

In the late 1970s, on behalf of a large number of factories and companies, the government invited Mr. Vincent Sum and other industrialists to organize an association of industry and commerce. Finally, the Kwun Tong Association of Industry and Commerce was founded in 1982, symbolizing the maturity of this industrial area.

Section 2 T Lam Tin (literally means “blue field”). It was originally called “Ham Tin” (literally means “salty field”) because the people there in the past made salt from seawater along the shore. Mr. Lo Hon of Lam Tin Kai Fong Welfare Association tells

Chapter 2 the story: There were some small-scale factories erected on the hillsides in Lam Tin in the 1960s. Those small industries included electroplating, polishing and metal wares. People mainly lived in squatter huts and seldom used electricity. Many of them had electric lamps, but few had refrigerators or television sets. Electricity theft was very common. In the 1970s, the government started to develop this area. When Lam Tin Kai Fong Welfare Association was established in 1967, they suggested the name “Lam Tin” to replace “Ham Tin”. This was to take the meaning of the Chinese saying of “cultivating jade from blue field”. Since then the electricity supply to Lam Tin greatly improved.

Section 2 Afamous for its seafood. At the beginning there were only two boats beside the “soldier’s pier”. Visitors paid somewhat over $10 for a seafood meal. $10 would be for the cooking and miscellaneous fees, and the rest for buying seafood. The seafood boat of Mr. Sit Chi Lit of the Lei Yue Mun Chapter 2 Kai Fong Welfare Association also anchored beside the “soldier’s pier” and was popular among customers. The seafood business has been prospering since the 1970s and the number of restaurants has increased rapidly. Soon Lei Yue Mun turned from a little fishing village into a famous scenic spot for tourism and cuisine in .
