GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

At 10.00 am the church bell will ring and as we prepare for worship the cantor will sing:

You Lord, are in this place, your mercy fills it, your presence is peace. You Lord, are in my heart, … my mind, … my life, … your presence fills it, your presence is peace.

I H

1. Glory to thee, who safe hast kept 2. Direct, control, suggest, this day And hast refreshed me whilst I slept; All I design, or do, or say; Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake That all my powers, with all their might, I may of endless light partake. In thy sole glory may unite.

3. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, Praise him all creatures here below, Praise him above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Thomas Ken 1637-1711 NEH 233

 In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen

Peace be with you. And also with you.

PENITENTIAL RITE

The celebrant introduces the service and invites the people to confess their sins:

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

May almighty God have mercy on us,  forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen 3

Let us pray

O God, the protector of all that trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy, that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal that we finally lose not the things eternal. Grant this, O heavenly Father, for the sake of Je- sus Christ, our Lord. Amen

MINISTRY OF THE WORD

A R L P E 3: 14 -21 Read by Vy Dan Vu

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heav- en and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that sur- passes knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Je- sus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

For the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

A great prophet has risen in our midst. God has visited his people.

T H G

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John  Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

6: 1-21

After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disci- ples. Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.”

5

Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thou- sand in all. Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distrib- uted them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.” When Jesus realised that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and start- ed across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.

The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

SERMON

Bishop Lindsay

After the sermon there is a short time for reflection.

P F

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 6

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,  and the life of the world to come. Amen

P P

All respond at the end of each petition

Lord in your mercy Hear our prayer.

After the last petition, all say together:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

T P

Christ is our peace. He has reconciled us in one Body by the Cross. We meet in his name, and share his peace.

The peace of the risen Lord be always with you. And also with you.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

O H

During the singing of the hymn, the altar is prepared for Holy Communion.

1. Rejoice, the Lord is King! 2. Jesus, the Saviour, reigns, Your Lord and King adore; The God of truth and love; Mortals give thanks and sing, When he had purged our stains, And triumph evermore: He took his seat above:

Refrain Refrain

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; 3. He sits at God’s right hand Rejoice, again I say, rejoice! Till all his foes submit,

And bow to his command, And fall beneath his feet:

T G T

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

8

All may kneel or sit.

The celebrant continues the prayer which now recalls the Last Supper and the invitation from Jesus to remember his death and resurrection in the gift of Holy Communion.

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit,

The sanctuary bell is rung.

we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 

The sanctuary bell and the church bell are rung.

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ 

The sanctuary bell and the church bell are rung.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. 9

 Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

The celebrant sings

Through him, with him, in him, united in the Holy Spirit, All glory and honour is yours O Lord, almighty Father, amen, amen.

T L’ P

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The celebrant breaks the Host in silence

Behold the Lamb of God Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper.

Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

Those who are making a spiritual communion should pray the following prayer:

At your feet O Jesus I prostrate myself before you with an unworthy yet contrite heart, humbled, yet longing to be in your eucharistic presence. I love the gift of yourself offered to me in this great and Blessed Sacrament. Though unable to receive this food for my journey, I desire all the graces that this encounter with you can bring, and offer my heart afresh as a place where you might dwell. While I wait for the day when I shall again have the joy of sacramental communion, I trust in your desire to abide in me, and wish to possess you in spirit. Come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for you. Amen

As we meditate on the gift of the Holy Eucharist, the cantor sings:

Author of life divine, who hast a table spread, furnished with mystic wine and everlasting bread. Preserve the life thyself hast given, and feed and train us up for heaven.

Our needy souls sustain with fresh supplies of love, till all thy life we gain, and all thy fulness prove, And strengthen with thy perfect grace, behold without a veil thy face.

Words: Charles Wesley 1707 -88 Tune: Henry Lawes 1596 -1662

Once you have received communion or made your spiritual communion, spend some time in re- flection. You might find it helpful to use the following prayer in thanksgiving:

God in heaven, may your Holy Spirit, the Comforter who proceeds from you, en- lighten my mind, lead me into all truth and make me active in your service; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

P C P

God of our pilgrimage, you have willed that the gate of mercy should stand open for those who trust in you: look upon us with your favour that we who follow the path of your will may never wander from the way of life; through Jesus Christ our

Lord. Amen

THE BLESSING AND DISMISSAL

May God the Father who made you for himself watch over and protect you. May Jesus be your friend and your brother as you journey through the coming week. May the Holy Spirit strengthen you and encourage you as you seek to know the Father’s will, and the blessing of God Almighty, the  Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen

1. Christ is our cornerstone, 2. Here may we gain from heaven On him alone we build; The grace which we implore; With his true saints alone And may that grace, once given, The courts of heaven are filled: Be with us evermore, On his great love Until that day Our hopes we place When all the blest Of present grace To endless rest And joys above. Are called away.

Opportunities for the practice of fortitude, magnanimity and magnificence do not of- ten occur; but gentleness, moderation, integrity and humility are virtues with which all the actions of our lives should be coloured. There are virtues nobler than these; but the practice of these ‘smaller’ virtues is more necessary.

St Francis of Assisi
