WABAG

Wabag is the capital of . Enga is located 2,000 metres above sea level, which makes it the most elevated Province in Papua New Guinea. Enga shares its border with the Western Highlands, Southern Highlands, Hela, Madang, and East and West Provinces, making it the most central Province in Papua New Guinea. The Porgera Gold mine is also located in Enga Province.

A unique feature of Enga Province is that it has only one language dialect. That is, all Engans speak the same language. In a country where more than 750 different languages are spoken, this is quite amazing.

Climate

Being the highest Province in PNG, Enga can be quite cold with temperatures ranging from 5 to 22 degrees Celsius all year round. Participants travelling to Enga with the Australian Education Roadshow should make sure they bring some warm clothes on the trip, especially to wear at night.

Educational Institutions in Enga

Enga has a large number of primary and high schools, 4 secondary schools, one international school, one Teachers college, one university centre and one nursing college.

It also has a business college which, for the first time this year, has seen students graduating with Bachelor Degrees in IT and Accounting under a partnership with Southern Cross University.

Provincial Government support for Education in Enga

Since Hon Grand Chief Governor Peter Ipatas was elected as Governor of Enga in 2006, education has been his main priority. From 1996 to 2012, Enga was the only Province in PNG where children’s school fees were paid by the Enga government from Prep to Colleges and Universities.

After the National government implemented a policy of free education in 2012, Governor Ipatas began to award scholarships to Engan students for technical education, pilot training and medicine. Through these scholarships, many Engan students now study in the Philippines. The Governor has admitted, however, that the Philippines is not best placed to provide training for students seeking more advanced educational qualifications.

Today, around 60% of the students in Universities and colleges in PNG come from Enga, reflecting the benefits of the Engan Government’s focus on education.

For these reasons and with support from other Australian Government and Australian Awards officials in PNG, we have decided to take the Australian Education Road Show to Enga this year for the first time.

We have been promised significant support from Governor Ipitas and officials from the Enga Provincial Government, including help in organising a suitable venue as well as an assurance to provide Police security escorts from the Airport to the Kumul Lodge Hotel, to our venue in Wabag and for the return journey to the Airport.
