In July, we saw one of the greatest major championship battles of all time, as Sweden’s Henrik Stenson eventually emerged victorious over Phil Mickelson in the Open Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland, with a thrilling display of skill from both players. Golf’s successful reintroduction to the Olympic Games gave the sport exposure to a huge global audience, including many regions where golf is not widely played, like host country Brazil. It’s perhaps no coincidence that since the Olympics in Rio, the Chinese government appears to have reassessed its stance towards golf, including it on a list of ‘outdoor and fashion sports’ whose development should be speeded up as part of a plan to develop the country’s leisure industry. And as the year closed, Tiger Woods made a positive return to the game, giving us the prospect of a returning hero whose performances over the past twenty years have done so much to improve the popularity of golf. In 2017 we can look forward to the major championship debut of Erin Hills in Wisconsin – which features on our cover – as the USGA continues to showcase some of the best recent golf design for its flagship tournament, the US Open.
