Golf’s successful reintroduction to the Olympic Games gave the sport exposure to a huge global audience, including many regions where golf is not widely played, like host country Brazil. It’s perhaps no coincidence that since the Olympics in Rio, the Chinese government appears to have reassessed its stance towards golf, including it on a list of ‘outdoor and fashion sports’ whose development should be speeded up as part of a plan to develop the country’s leisure industry.

For just the second time since 2000, the won the Ryder Cup, in convincing style. And as the year closed, made a positive return to the game, giving us the prospect of a returning hero whose performances over the past twenty years have done so much to improve the popularity of golf.

In 2017 we can look forward to the major championship debut of Erin Hills in Wisconsin – which features on our cover – as the USGA continues to showcase some of the best recent golf design for its flagship tournament, the US Open.

Great golf design doesn’t happen by chance. It is the result of highly skilled and

Golf Optimum Compromising withnature Michel Niedbala discusses how a golf course’s interaction with nature is key to creating original designs

hen designing a golf course, striking a balance between the golf and the protection of nature should be a key target. If done well, this combination will Whelp provide the course with a level of originality. This balance is vital throughout the process of developing a golf course – from its concept, through the construction phase and ending up with its maintenance, which should always be completely respectful of the environment. 27 Rain Bird The three ‘A’s of water management

Rain Bird explains how golf clubs can avoid water wastage and poor turf quality

n irrigation system’s overall efficiency is directly related to how the watering schedule is adjusted. Improper scheduling results in water wastage, inferior turf quality and a general discontentA with playing conditions. Studies have shown that fairways and greens are often overwatered by 30 to 50 percent. The question is, how can water be conserved, while at the same time maintaining a healthy and green course? The answer lies in the ‘triple A’ approach: anticipate, adjust, achieve. The first step is anticipating. Begin by forecasting seasonal weather changes, as they can be an ‘early warning system’. You can collect data from the nearest meteorological department or any nearby golf course that has a weather station. You can estimate daily, weekly or monthly water requirements based on weather data and adjust watering times on this basis. The greatest water savings come from monthly adjustments of watering times. Some tricks in this area include knowing when to you to increase or decrease the run times of all stations peak up, and anticipating hot weather and increasing on a programme from 0 to 300 percent. watering ahead of this.
