Welcome I would like to extend a warm welcome to today’s match officials, likewise to any East Midlands Counties League representatives, and of course to the management, players, and travelling supporters of today’s opposition last years’ runners up in the league - Stapenhill Football Club.

We hope that you all enjoy the facilities available here at Riverside Park. During your visit however, we would politely request that you respect the facilities that we have worked hard as a club to both obtain, and maintain.

Please note that the INTERIOR BUILDINGS within the ground are designated as STRICTLY NO SMOKING AREAS in accordance with current legislation.

The close season is now over, and having had our appetites for the forthcoming season wetted by the World Cup, I’m sure you are most probably like me, looking forward to an enjoyable season of football?

Last season threw up some difficult challenges for us, both on and off the park, and we must not lose sight of the fact that whilst some of us “live for football”, it is in fact, at the end of the day, only a game.

Thanks for your attention, I hope that you enjoy the game.

All the best - Steve Chamberlain (Editor)

From The Dugout Manager Liam East and the rest of the Barrow Town staff, are under no illusions about the task in hand after last season’s struggle. There are many new faces at the club, and having had the benefit of a full and structured pre-season schedule, East is confident of improving the club’s fortunes this time around.

“We are looking to have a fit and competitive side by the time the season curtain raiser comes around. I want us to play football, but I also want us to be competitive against the top sides in the league. The response from players both old and new is very encouraging, but I want a delivery on the promise of good old fashioned hard work on the training ground as well as on the pitch.”

There have been a couple of good away wins during the pre- season, an abandoned game (on safety grounds due to thunder and lightning typical of the English Summer!), and a testing visit to Daventry which after a level first period, unfortunately ended up in a heavy defeat.

“We have our motivations for the season ahead, and will be focusing on them as we strive to achieve success for Barrow Town.”

“Here we go then, I hope you all enjoy the game?”

Liam

The Visitors - Stapenhill Having lost the services of Manager Steve Titterton; prolific Striker Stephen Hart (last season’s East Midlands Counties League Golden Boot winner with 52 goals); Midfielder Ryan Pirrie and Defender Callam Keenan, who have all left to join Bardon Hill, you could be forgiven for thinking that Stapenhill have been ravaged of talent, and possibly having lost some of their ambition over the close season?

However, this would appear to be very far from the truth. Steve Gough has made it known that he wants to build an exciting long term future for Stapenhill after being appointed as the clubs new manager.

The 33 year old former Swans stalwart and ex-Burton Albion Midfielder, has now taken over at Edge Hill following the departure of Titterton. Talking to The Burton Mail “I’ve been at the club on and off for the last decade,” he said. “I’ve got the same beliefs as the Chairman Martin Furniss, and have got the club at heart. It’s not just about things on the pitch, but off the pitch as well. We want to be here in 10 years’ time.” Assisted by Wes Yardley, Gough intends to build a young side with an appetite for football, but this will be achieved from within the community framework of the club. In the spirit of sportsmanship, we wish Steve Gough and his players and staff all the very best for the coming season.

As can be seen from the table above, over the course of the 2013-14 season, some eight hundred and sixty spectators visited Riverside Park.

We only managed to net 40 goals in the league campaign, and somewhat disappointingly we conceded 122 goals.

Hopefully we can improve upon all of the above statistics in the 2014- 15 Season?

History of Barrow Town Football Club

Football in Barrow upon Soar has its' origins in the late 19th century. The population of the village at that time would have numbered around 1000, compared with around 7000 today.

The team, known as the Barrow Rising Stars were based at The Railway Inn (now the Soar bridge), and played their football near the Mill. Members of the and District League, they were obviously formidable opposition as their record shows they were winners of Division 1 in 1901/2 and 1902/3 and also Division 2 Champions in 1911/12. Cup success included the Bass Charity Cup, Rolleston Cup, and the County Cup. In one particular season four trophies came their way.

The early years of the century saw the birth of the Old Boys (now Barrow Town). This team also played down "Mill Lane", and comprised mainly of boys from the village grammar school, their record though did not compare with the stars.

Immediately prior to the First World War another Barrow team, The Trinity, were gaining prominence. Also members of the Loughborough and District League Division 1, they rivalled

R i v e r s i d e r s R e v i e w S t a p e n h i l l P a g e | 7 I s s u e O n e the stars as top team from the village. Other members of the league at that time were Quorn Havelock, Quorn Emanuel, and no less than four teams from Sileby (Imps, Excelsior, Amateurs and Vics). A referee's match fee in 1913 was 2/6d and football boots 6/- per pair (30p).

Trinity FC had an illustrious spell from 1918 onwards and during an 18 year period picked up a league championship, the league cup, and the Rolleston Cup. The Trinity's glories could not last and 1930 saw the emergence of 'The Gunners' and 'Barrow Athletic', The Old Boys reappearing in 1932. The Old Boys were members of the Leics. Mutual League and for a while were based at Cotes Road, before moving to North Street and joining the Loughborough Alliance.

After the Second World War, The Old Boys reformed in 1947 and following a public meeting at The Working Men's Club, entered the Senior League with immediate impact. They reached the semi-final of The Senior Cup but were beaten by Whitwick Colliery. The competition also included Leicester City Reserves.

In 1968/69 The Old Boys finished runners-up in Division 2 and were promoted to what was then Division 1. Managed by much respected local man Billy Williamson, they were also winners of The Loughborough Charity Cup and The Sileby Cup, (later renamed The Billy Williamson trophy in his honour). Soon after Barrow moved to their current headquarters at Riverside Park under the new title of Barrow Town.

The success of 68/69 was emulated by the team of 92/93 managed by two more local favourites Arthur Chadburn and Colin Sykes. This team gained promotion to the Premier

R i v e r s i d e r s R e v i e w S t a p e n h i l l P a g e | 8 I s s u e O n e

Division as champions. The 94/95 season was a landmark in Barrow's history with a number of records being broken. Highest ever placing’s for the 1st and 2nd teams. Ian Hunter's haul of 61 league and cup goals. 119 goals scored, with an 18 game unbeaten run-in, culminating in being pipped to the Premiership title by one point. The team again consisted of the nucleus of the promotion winning side, under the same successful management team.

In recent years, the club has grown in stature and maintained their Premier Division status. Three times winners of The Loughborough Charity Cup, defeating Coalville 3-1 in 96/97, Ibstock 1-0 in 98/99 (the competition's centenary year), and under Richard Pitman defeating Shepshed Dynamo on penalties in 2000/1 after the teams were locked at 2-2 after extra time.

Riverside Park has undergone several improvements in recent years, most notably the addition of floodlighting for both the main pitch and training area; a new clubhouse and changing rooms; a 50 seat grandstand; covered standing paddock; and new dugouts. The recent amalgamation of all junior, youth and senior teams, makes Barrow Town one of the largest football organisations in the county, which now caters for soccer from under eight to senior level.

History of Stapenhill Football Club

Stapenhill Football Club was formed in 1947 and started playing at their current ground, Edge Hill in 1955.

In 1957/58 when they joined the Leicestershire Senior League and gained promotion from Division 2 to Division 1.

In 1958/59 and 1959/60 they were Senior League Champions.

The club remained in the Leicestershire Senior League until 1988/89 when they moved up to the Midland Combination, where they were runners up in 1989/90 and 1994/95.

In 1995, Stapenhill became founder members of the Midland Football Alliance, but had to resign from the league in 2002, and returned to the Leicestershire Senior League, which they subsequently won in2007/8.

They then re-joined the Midland Football Alliance, until a disastrous fire destroyed the club. Now reformed, the club gained promotion to the East Midlands Counties Football League in 2012/13.

10 Years on the Barrow Belles Bow Out Ten years on since their inception, the 2013-14 Season saw the Barrow Belles finally call time on their membership of the Leicester City & County Girls Football League.

The “Belles” had initially been formed by Judy Banks, originally with the idea simply to provide the opportunity to play football, and offer coaching where required, to girls from Barrow and the surrounding areas aged under 10. In fact the name “Barrow Belles” was decided upon because of two factors. One being that Judy’s daughter who was one of the first participants is called Annabelle, and the second being that the most dominant women’s football team in existence at that time were Doncaster Belles (yes not Arsenal)! Annabelle eventually lost interest and Judy understandably also, which then heralded the Ken Brown era. Under Ken’s management, the team started to compete in league competition, and when Ken then after passed the managerial duties to Pete Cox, the Belles were well established within the Leicester City & County Girls Football League. Things were difficult at times, an entire season was endured with no victories whatsoever, but the girls continued steadfastly. Which brings us to the present day. Pete Cox is very proud of the fact that no less than three of his final squad (Rachael Moorhouse, Beth Johnson and Alana Cunningham) have had successful trials with Leicester City Ladies, and from this point forward will now be competing in blue and white. The remainder of the now under 18’s squad, are all parting company to pursue University educations etc. and with insufficient numbers remaining, the “Belles” are sadly no more. Congratulations to Pete and everyone involved with the club over the years. It has been a very pleasant and successful association.

After being setup back in 2010, Non-League Day has given football outside of the top four divisions of the pyramid the recognition it so richly deserves. For one day a year, during the international break, all football fans are encouraged to get down to their local clubs and get back to the roots of football, where the heart of the game really lies. So remember to put September 6th in your diaries, and why not follow us to Graham Street Prims.

Treatment Table Following pre-season training, and an extensive bout of “friendly” fixtures, we are pleased to report that the newly assembled first team squad has emerged largely unscathed from major injuries.

Match Report In what was undoubtedly a massive step up in terms of the quality of the opposition, when The Riversiders travelled the short way down the M1, to Southern League Division One Central club - Daventry Town’s Communications Park on Saturday 26th July 2014 for a testing pre-season friendly.

The game was all square at half time (1-1) but Daventry came alive in the second period and completely dominated the match scoring seven further goals without reply.

A Daventry trialist, bagged himself a hat-trick, which surely must have impressed watching Daventry First Team Manager: Darran Foster and Assistant Manager: Neil Champelovier?

Mitchell Piggon also grabbed himself a goal, Dior Angus; Josh O`Grady; Ollie Wilkinson and Barry Deakin, completed the Daventry scoring in an impressive 8-1 win.

Midlands Super League for Next Season? According to reports in The Non-League Paper, a new “Midlands Super League” is set to be formed in time for next season 2015-16. The Step 5 league, is planned initially as a merger of the existing Midland Alliance (formed 20 years ago) and the Step 6 Midland Combination.

Under the banner of The Midland League, the new competition will kick-off in August providing that the plan is approved by the member clubs of the existing leagues, at their respective Annual General Meetings in June? A new company Ltd, has already been registered in anticipation.

The ultimate aim of the new league being to strengthen Midlands’s football, with both leagues pooling their resources.

The adjacent Step 6 competitions, the (Regional) League, formed as the Birmingham & District League in 1889, and the East Midlands Counties League, were also invited to become part of the new league, but both have so far declined.

Midland Combination Secretary Nigel Wood, said that if the new league gets the go ahead for next season, then the situation regarding promotion and relegation would continue as it currently stands. This means one team going up from each of the Step 5 feeders, including the West Midlands and East Midlands leagues.
