About the Project

The recording of the monumental inscriptions inside and outside the church was undertaken as a summer project for the University of the Third Age, (U3A) Great Glen Family History Group in 2010. All care has been taken to ensure accuracy of the transcription, however a visit to the church or churchyard to check with the original inscriptions is recommended.

Words from many inscriptions were unable to be read for reasons such as broken stones, writing worn away through time etc., and so some blank spaces occur in the transcriptions. The aim was to record the words exactly as they are found on the stone – so variations in spelling are a common occurrence.

Some of the very old graves were transcribed and published in 1798 in a book called ‘The History and Antiquities of Leicestershire’ by John Nichols and this can be seen at the County Record Office. Where the script was found to be unreadable, a few words have been taken from these transcripts and identified in [] brackets to help the researcher.

Thurnby

Thurnby has a hilltop church with a 13th century nave and a central tower on massive arches built when Norman style was changing to English. The rest of the church is chiefly modern, but it still keeps a 13c pillared font, an old and battered ironbound chest and a few stones carved by either Norman or Saxon masons.

When the church was first built, is uncertain, however a plaque in the chancel refers to a foundation date of 1110. It was almost certainly in existence before 1143, but the earlier date is totally unsubstantiated.

John Nichols, in the 1790s wrote of the church at Thurnby : Dedicated to St Luke, the church at Thurnby consists of a nave, a large south aisle, and a small low north aisle, each separated from the nave by three lofty arches, over each of which is a clerestory window. The tower is at the east end, and contains five bells.

The old chancel was pulled down a little more than 20 years since, for which a faculty was obtained from the court. It stood at the east end of, and adjoining the tower, so that the passage from the nave to the chancel was through the steeple. When it was pulled down, the grave stones which lay in the old chancel were taken up and placed against the east wall of the tower, where many of them still stand.

The chancel and altar, or rather the substitute for them, are now at the east end of the south aisle.

The north aisle is appropriated to Stoughton; and the seats belonging to are promiscuously placed in the nave and south aisle. In the west window are some trifling remains of painted glass. There is an old round font, on eight small clustered pillars.

The battered ironbound chest The old round font
