2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN November 25, 2012 MarchThirty-Third 12, 2017 Sunday Second in SundayOrdinary of TimeLent A NOTE FROM F ATHER KEVIN

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

+ Pax et Bonum!

Welcome to St. Maria Goretti on this the Second Sunday of our 2017 Season of Lent! We come together today to once again show our love, our Faith, and our commitment to our Lord, Jesus Christ! We do want to welcome all of our guests and visitors who join us for Mass this weekend! It is an honor to pray with you around the Altar of the Lord!

I want to continue our examination of the importance and meaning of our new bells and bell tower, that we began two weeks ago. Last week in the bulletin, we discussed the “Blessing of the Bells”, and how many times it is commonly referred to as the “Baptism of the Bells”, which it really is not. The Rite of the Blessing of the Bells just borrows several of the symbols of Baptism, with the bells being washed, and named, and anointed, before they are hoisted up into place in the bell tower. We invite everyone to the official blessing of our new bells on July 8th this summer at our annual Italian Festival.

This week is a very important week for our new bells. This Wednesday, March 15th, the bells will be cast at the Pontifical Marinelli Bell Foundry in Agnone, Italy. Bronze, a mixture of 82% brass and 18% tin, will be super-heated and poured into molds that have been handmade by artisans from the Marinelli family. As the hot metal is poured into molds, prayers are offered to God, and from the very beginning of their existence, the metal is blessed. A group of us from the Parish will leave tomorrow to attend the casting and to offer the prayers in Agnone, Italy, at the Foundry. We will be sending a video-feed back here to Westfield, where our school community and anyone who wants to join them, will be able to see the casting on the big screen in our Parish Hall. That special viewing from Italy will take place at 10:00 AM this Wednesday, again, March 15th. All are welcome. We also hope to have some recorded video available on our Facebook page, for those who can’t join us at 10:00 AM.

The Pontificia Fonderia Marinelli, or Marinelli Pontifical Foundry, Marinelli Bell Foundry, is the successor of a bell foundry already at work in Agnone, Italy in 1040! That’s nearly a thousand years! The foundry is considered Italy’s oldest family- run business, and is among the three oldest family-run businesses in the world! In addition to the bell foundry, the company also produces bronze portals, bas-reliefs, church artifacts, and does bell restorations. The village of Agnone is nestled in the Apennine hills of Italy, approximately two and a half hours south east of . The Foundry is right in the center of town, as the town built up around the Foundry. In 1924, the Foundry was granted “the title of Pontifical” by the Vatican. This made them the official producer of bells for the Catholic Church. Today ninety-percent of their business is for Catholic churches around the world. The company today is co-owned and operated by the brothers Armando and Pasquale Marinelli, direct descendants of the founders of the company, centuries ago. The Foundry typically produces up to 50 bells a year and currently employs around a dozen people. Both Amando and Pasquale also work themselves in the actual foundry.

The Marinelli Bell Company has produced all of the bells at the Vatican. They made the final bell to be installed in the leaning Tower of Pisa. It is important to note that the bell tower in Pisa was already leaning, BEFORE they put the last bell in. The last bell was installed in Pisa to replace one of the original ones that was destroyed during World War II. They also made a replacement bell for the Benedictine Monastery at Monte Cassino, which also was destroyed during World War II. Marinelli bells are also in the Sanctuary of the Madonna in Pompeii and at the United Nations building in New York City. Besides gracing the great cathedrals of Europe, Marinelli bells can also be found in Jerusalem, Beijing, South America, and South Korea! And very soon, of course, right here in Westfield!

Hopefully, you are having a great Lent so far! Please remember that the Stations of the Cross are prayed every Friday evening at 7:00 PM, in the main sanctuary for Lent. Come and join us this Friday!

I’m away with our RCIA class this weekend for their retreat. Please keep our new brothers and sisters in your prayers this weekend! Have a great week!

In Christ, Fr. Kevin

A clean conscience makes a soft pillow.

Welcome! For more than 21 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. — Father Kevin WELCOME: & Siobhan Koelsch, Robert & Laura Konopinski, Jared & Ashley Nichter
