Hampton Loade is an interesting hamlet straggling both the east and west banks of the . The area grew from the mid 17th century when it was occupied by a blast furnace and in 1786 work started on the development of a forge at the site on one side of the papermill, then on both sides of the river. There was also a tin works on the site between 1822 and 1826.

The two banks are connected by a passenger ferry (not currently operating), the ferry is responsible for Hamlet Loade’s name and Loade is derived from Lode, an old word for ferry.
