Non-Factorial Randomized Block Design method was used in this study. The first stage used non- factorial randomized block design which consisted of three blocks and six treatments as follows: F1 (8 g betel leaf, 2 g betel lime), F2 (8 g betel leaf, 2 g betel lime, 2 g areca nut, 1 g gambier), F3 (8 g betel leaf, 2 g betel lime, 2.5 g areca nut, 1.5 g gambier), F4 (8 g betel leaf, 2 g betel lime, 3 g areca nut, 2 g gambier), F5 (8 g betel leaf, 2 g betel lime , 3.5 g areca nut, 2.5 g gambier) and F6 (cefadroxil).The observed parameters in betel chew formulation were antibacterial activity, cellulair metabolites leakage and antioxidant. Results of chemical and microbiological analyses showed that the best treatment was found on F5 treatment (8 g betel leaf, 2 g betel lime, 3.5 g areca nut, 2.5 g gambier) antibacterial activity of 8.25 mm, with antioxidant IC50 of 2.77 mg/ml and cellulair metabolites leakage of 1.22 nm (at wave length of 260 nm) and 1.51 nm (at wave length of 280 nm), respectively. Analysis of inhibition activity of α-glucosidase enzyme from each extract was done using microplate-96 well method, then the IC50 value was determined. The results showed that the inhibition activity of alpha glucosidase enzyme against gambier ethanolic extract was giving positive result, in delaying the glucose adsorption, while the highest activity was found in gambier leaves of 96,446%. The IC50 values of gambier leaves extract were compared to positive control of acarbose (Glucobay®) atwith ratio of 35,532 ppm which equal to 0,262 ppm. In conclusion, the gambier ethanolic extract has the best inhibitory activity against the alpha glucosidase enzyme to inhibite the blood sugar level, which can be used as one of traditional herbal medicine (THM) product.     GROWING Areca catechu IN PALM BEACH COUNTY Submitted by Charlie Beck Areca catechu is a small to medium sized, pinnate palm which is widely cultivated throughout the tropics. The common name is the betel-nut palm. It can be readily found growing in the Tropical Pacific, Asia and Eastern Africa. The origin of this species is uncertain but it is assumed to be from Malaysian rainforest areas. Being monoecious, this palm can produce viable seeds from a single plant. Even though this palm’s footprint is small it can grow to 100’ tall in the tropics. I’ve never seen this palm taller than 30’ in Florida. You might ask “why is this palm so widely cultivated across the tropics?” The answer is that the seeds of this palm are coveted for their intoxicating properties. Betel-nut seeds are chewed with slaked lime and pepper vine leaves. The mild narcotic effect can be addicting. Chewing the seeds is reported to be part of certain Hindu rituals. The negative effect of frequent betel-nut chewing is that it stains gums and saliva red and stains teeth black. A friend of mine from India told me that black teeth and red gums are a common sight in his native country and many other tropical areas. If you remember the stage play South Pacific, there was a character named Bloody Mary. The reason she was named Bloody Mary was because of her red stained gums and saliva due to betel-nut chewing. Areca catechu has three distinct varieties. The common form of this palm has emerald green leaves and crownshaft.

Two phases of experiment with four (4) groups of male albino rats comprising of five (5) animals each, averagely weighing 180g-200g were employed. Phase 1 of the experiment was treated with coconut oil supplemented diet, where rodent chow was mixed with coconut oil while phase 2 experimental animals were treated with coconut oil by oral gavage. Group 1 served as the control for both phases while group 2, 3 and 4 were treated with 3ml/kg, 6ml/kg and 12ml/kg of coconut oil respectively for 4weeks. Results: The physical examination of the samples showed that the appearance of hot press method of extraction of coconut oil is pale-yellow while the oil from cold press method of extraction is colourless.

Study published 2015-2020. 118 articles were rated. 28 articles were screened, 80 articles were excluded, 25 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility and 10 full-text articles according to inclusion criteria.

Bill Schlosser was my former graduate student at the University of Idaho. He is now at Michigan State University and shortly will be a USAID employee in Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East. He and I researched special forest products together for about 6 or 7 years. In the course of today’s presentation, I’m going to focus primarily on products from the Pacific Northwest—major products, their markets, and economic contribution. However, I’m going to digress at various times to show the international flavor of this market. There is a growing industry on the eastside of the Cascades, where I work. In fact, many of the products that are harvested on the eastside currently are marketed and processed through westside processors, a phenomenon that is slowly changing. There are large international markets for a variety of products. The special forest products industry consists of several specialized industries. The floral greens industry uses wild-harvested evergreen plant materials in floral arrangements. Typically, these plants are flexible and have long-lasting properties so they can be used in fresh or dried arrangements, often as background material. Moss is used as covering for the base of arrangements, or in pots or baskets. Christmas ornamentals are bough products, primarily cones, that are used in Christmas wreaths, swags, and door charms.

The Chinese came for pepper and gambier plantation and settled at riverside which formed the frontier Chinese settlement called “Kangkar”. It is also believed that kangkar is the earliest established Chinese settlement in Johor, then many of them substituted by New Village in 1950s, and today’s modern housing in the 20th century. Irony the kangkar settlements are declining while some already abandoned. Furthermore, study of Chinese settled at Johor in kangkar settlement is still lacking, which severely constrain the preservation of such historical settlement. To help fill this gap, this paper aims to delineate the kangkar settlement which represents strong historical significance to Chinese architectural paradigm in Johor.
