TUESDAY 2ND FEBRUARY 2016 MARKET REPORT Despite stormy weather there was another strong entry of clean cattle with almost 40 on offer with some excellent heifers on show. Trade for lighter cattle remains firm with ‘butchers heifers’ topping 240ppk. There was an increase in the number of hoggs this week with continued encouraging signs with good fit pens topping £100. 10 steers averaged 178.06ppk and topped at 209.50ppk (£1267) 5 young bulls averaged 141.14ppk and topped at 193.50ppk (£1267) 29 heifers averaged 193.01ppk and topped at 247.50ppk (£1424) 11 OTM cattle topped at 139.50ppk (£816) 789 Hoggs averaged 170.70ppk and topped at £109 (202.00ppk) 109 cull ewes averaged £57.23 and topped at £116

5 YOUNG BULLS Very few bulls forward and mainly made up of black and whites. Top price per kilo and per head going to an excellent Lim bull from M Sunley of Farndale, weighing 655kg and selling for 193.50ppk (£1267) to R Agar of Ilkley. A Sim bull from D Green of Hunmanby, weighing 540kg sold for 146.50ppk (£791) to Cleveland Meat Co. of Stockton on Tees.

10 STEERS There were slightly fewer steers available this week at Malton with more needed please. The top price per kilo went to a very good Lim steer from CF Beal of , weighing 560kg and selling for 209.50ppk (£1173) to TS Horsley of Scarborough. The top price per head went to a Lim from TW C & SA Scaling of Kirbymisperton, weighing 645kg and selling for £1267 (196.50ppk) to Worsley Wholesale Butchers of Briestfield. There was another Lim from the same home that sold for 188.50ppk (£1169) and a heavier Montbéliarde from RW Clark of Strensall, weighing 730kg and selling for £1018.

29 HEIFERS There was an increase in the number of heifers available this week with another strong entry of all types and weights. The top price per kilo went to two excellent Lim heifers from GI Marwood of Harome. The lighter heifer weighing 490kg sold for 247.50ppk (£1213) to Thornton Butchers and the heavier (515kg) heifer reached 247.50ppk (£1275) to D Cammish of Driffield. The top price per head went to a BB from the same home, weighing 580kg and selling for £1424 (245.50ppk) to Radford’s Butchers of Sleights. Others to sell well included a very good BAX from CF Beal of Yedingham, weighing 465kg and reaching 229.50ppk and a BB from DR Jackson & Sons of Carnaby reaching 233.50ppk (£1261).  Lim Heifers to 247.50ppk (£1213) – 490kg – GI Marwood, Harome  Lim Heifers to 247.50ppk (£1275) – 515kg – GI Marwood, Harome  BB Heifers to 245.50ppk (£1424) – 580kg – GI Marwood, Harome  BAX Heifers to 229.50ppk (£1067) – 465kg – CF Beal, Yedingham  CHX Heifers to 198.50ppk (£1201) – 605kg – P Beal, West

11 OTM CATTLE Slightly more OTM’s on offer this week at Malton with the top price per kilo and per head going to a 40 month old Lim Cow from K Deighton of Brandsburton, weighing 585kg and selling for 139.50ppk (£816) to Cleveland Meat Co. of Stockton on Tees. A 60 month Lim cow from RW Harrison of Swinton, weighing 705kg sold for 109.50ppk (772) and a 84 month AA from JP & JM Hutchinson of West Ayton reached 95.50ppk (£578).

789 HOGGS There was an increase in the number of Hoggs on offer this Tuesday with more encouraging signs as good fit pens continue to top £100. The top price per kilo and per head went to an excellent pen of 3 from RH Green of Pickering, weighing 54kg and selling for 202.00ppk (£109) to GF Turner of Rillington. Others to sell well included a pen of 9 from RG Brader of Thixendale, weighing 61kg reached £100 and a pen of 8 from ML Dawson & Son or Crayke, weighing 53kg and selling for £97. A pen of 3 from CG Harper & Son of Newton-upon-Rawcliffe, weighing 44kg and selling for 193.00ppk. Two Rams from JL Chapman-Jewitt of Folkton, weighing 75kg sold for £106. 109 CULL EWES / 1 CULL RAMS Despite fewer ewes forward with Tuesday there was an improved trade. The top price went to a single Texel ram from KL Hodsman of Menethorpe, selling for £116 to P Davison of West Haddlesey. A pen of 8 Texel x ewes from RG Brader of Thixendale reached £92 to Yorkshire Halal Meat Supplies with another pen of 9 from the same home selling for £86. A pen of 6 Suffolk x ewes of FJ Hodsman of Eddlethorpe sold for £89.

Forest Hall Farm is an exceptional beef & sheep unit farmed in-hand by the Levens Hall Estate. Situated 5 miles north of Kendal on the edge of the Shap Fells, it extends to 4,720 acres of hill and in-bye land and carries 2,400 ewes and a 60 head beef suckler herd.

A farm manager is required, with good farm business, livestock and grassland management experience. Strong inter-personal, leadership and organisational skills are essential. An attractive remuneration package will be offered.
