• Total area of the16 research forests is 32 000 ha, of which about 15 000 ha in • Over 2000 experiments or permanent research plots • Research forests are nowadays governed/managed by Metsähallitus • In addition, many experiments and plots have been established in forests outside of Luke research forests, owned by Metsähallitus or forest companies

• Luke is responsible of the gene reserve forests in Finland • 44 gene reserve forests, 7 200 ha • Different climate zones • Scots pine, Norway spruce, Silver birch, Downy birch, broad-leaved species • + Gene reserve collections

• In addition to forests, Luke also is responsible of different animal and plant gene reserve protection in Finland

• About 500 ha agricultural research fields altogether in Jokioinen, Piikkiö, Ylistaro, Maaninka, Ruukki and Loue (7 ha) • Research on cereal plants, forage crops, ornamental plants etc. • Fields are nowadays governed by Metsähallitus • Dairy research farms in Jokioinen and Maaninka and a beef farm in Ruukki

Luke and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland join forces in VTT Bioruukki in Espoo. Luke has installed its pilot equipment in the Bioruukki biomass centre to refine biomass and by-products from forestry and agriculture into new types of high added value products, such as • biodegradable materials, • cosmetics and • food components.
