One of these times is now, as I prepare to stand down from my 17 years’ involvement with the Council and the last 10 years as its Chairman. Along the way there have been many memorable moments. These include events such as the IAA in Frankfurt, Techno Clas- sica, the Mille Miglia, the Villa D’Este Concorso, and of course BMW Motorrad Days. And I think not just of the events, but often the drives to get there. Be it through the scenery of Bavaria and northern Italy, across Death Valley, along the coast near Cape Town or the pristine beauty of New Zealand’s South Island. Events and Council meetings themselves invoke many fond memories, from a unique dinner on the 50 yard line in the Skydome in Toronto, to a boisterous beer or three in the beer tents at several Oktoberfests in Munich. But one factor remained constant, wherever I was, and whatever I was doing, I was sharing the ex- perience with BMW friends. I have always said clubs are not formed by cars or motorcycles, but by people – passionate and enthusiastic BMW owners. I have had the pleasure of meeting numerous members from clubs throughout the world as well as from the BMW corporate family.

Design tribute to the BMW M1 celebrates its world premiere at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2008. Munich/Cernobbio. To mark the 30th anniversary of the BMW M1 super sports car, BMW Group Design is presenting a homage to this legendary model as part of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2008. The BMW M1 designed by Giorgio Giugiaro was a car of superlatives and a highly emotive vehicle that was uncompromisingly primed for the race track. Spawning this development was the BMW Turbo by Paul Bracq, a revolutionary concept car which, in addition to its groundbreaking functional design, also boasted a raft of technical innovations. It is from these two unique vehicles that the BMW M1 Homage takes its cue – a design study that pays tribute to its forerunner models and an embodiment of the competence, creativity and potential of the BMW Group Design team. “For BMW, heritage is always also a living heritage. Drawing inspiration from your own past and thereby reinventing yourself – that is exactly what the BMW M1 Homage demonstrates in impressive style.” Dr Klaus Draeger, BMW Group Board Member, Development A particular forte of BMW Group Design is to draw on its own powerful history and actively feed this into the design of the future. The BMW M1 Homage is a design study in the tradition of a BMW Turbo that represents a contemporary take on the BMW M1 BMW Canada Inc. a BMW Group Company and the mid-engine concept.

BMW Corporate Communications Media Information BMW M Motorsport 14th August 2019 From M121 to P48: An overview of the evolution of BMW Turbo engines in motor racing. • All the key evolutionary steps from 50 years of BMW Turbo Power in motor racing at a glance. • M121 engine for the BMW 2002 TI kicks things off in 1969. • BMW Turbo engines see action in GT and touring car racing, as well as in Formula 1 and the BMW M1. Munich. BMW is celebrating ‘50 years of Turbo Power in motorsport’ in 2019. From the first turbo engine back in 1969 to the latest P48 engine for the BMW M4 DTM, which already has six wins to its name this season, there have been many steps forward. Here’s an overview of the evolution of the BMW Turbo engine in motor racing. 1969: BMW 2002 TI – Engine: BMW M121. As the first BMW Turbo racing engine, this four-cylinder, in-line engine with a two- litre capacity and turbocharger was a history-making pioneer. Dieter Quester (AUT) won the European Touring Car Championship in a BMW 2002 TI with turbo power. With 0.98 bar of overpressure, the first generation of turbo engine generated approx. 280 hp at 6,500 rpm. The exhaust fan was theoretically capable of developing a boost pressure of 1.76 bar, however, the pressure in the cylinder would have been so great, that the cylinder head would have lifted clean off. 1976: BMW 3.0 CSL – Engine: BMW M49/4. The BMW 3.0 CSL art car designed by Frank Stella (USA) raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (FRA) in 1976 with the BMW M49/4 turbo engine.
