ALAN JONES

The first driver to win a driver’s crown for Williams, Alan Jones scored 12 F1 victories in a career spanning 1975-1986 and also raced successfully in Can Am, Indy Car, sports cars and touring cars.

Alan Jones made his Formula 1 debut at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, driving a privately-entered Hesketh. After his first team folded a few races later, Jones was drafted in to replace the injured Rolf Stommelen at the Embassy Hill team, where he recorded a best finish of 5th in the German Grand Prix. Jones scored his first full-time F1 drive with the Surtees team for 1976, scoring 7 points and finishing 15th in the World Championship, before moving to the Shadow team in 1977, where he recorded his maiden F1 victory in the Austrian Grand Prix.

The following year was a busy one for Jones, who won the 1978 Can Am Championship in the USA and also completed a full F1 season for the fledgling Williams team. A best finish of second in the late-season United States Grand Prix was a taste of better things to come, as Jones recorded four wins for Williams in the 1979 F1 season and finished third in the Driver’s Championship. Staying on for Williams in 1980, Jones was the class of the field, winning five times to secure the World Championship in emphatic style. Jones narrowly failed to defend his title in 1981 and left Formula 1 on a high, retiring after the last race of the season in the USA, which he won. 27 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
