Dear

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION – SMOKING

I write in response to your request for information in relation to smoking within NHS Lothian grounds.

Question:  Is the smokefree (i.e. does not allow smoking anywhere on hospital grounds) and, if yes, what date did this happen?

Answer: Yes, 1st April 2015

Question:  How many patients/service users have absconded/gone AWOL while on leave for each year since 2000?

Answer: The table below details figures taken from DATIX on how many patients/service users absconded/gone AWOL whilst on leave during the period 01/01/2011 to 31/12/2019 broken down by Site and calendar year. Please note that we do not hold date prior to 2011.

Smoking – January 2020

Question:  Of these, how many patients/service users have absconded/gone AWOL while on leave to have a cigarette or where the report mentions cigarettes for each year since 2000?

Answer: The table below details how many patients/service users absconded/gone AWOL whilst on leave to have a cigarette or where the report mentions cigarettes during the period 01/01/2014 to 31/12/2019, broken down by Site and calendar year.

Question:  When looking at all incident reports (not just those in which a patient absconded), how many incident reports mentioned "smoking", "smoke", "cigarette" or "lighter" a) in 2017, b) in 2018 and c) in 2019?

Answer: The table below details how many adverse events mentioned "smoking", "smoke", "cigarette" or "lighter" during 01/01/2017 to 31/12/2019 broken down by Site and calendar year.

2017 2018 2019 CAMHS ≤5 ≤5 7 Ellen's Glen House ≤5 10 11 ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 Midlothian Community Hospital ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 Orchard Clinic 13 29 27* Royal Edinburgh Hospital 186 158 112* St John's Hospital 32 34 15* Tippethill House ≤5 ≤5 0 Total 235 234 176

*Please note the reason the numbers may be less than in previous response for the calendar year because they may have been moved to one of the other Divisions, or, an adverse event may be rejected/deleted due to duplication of reporting e.g. two people report the same event and we only require one to review.
