Robert G. Driscoll, Jr. Associate Vice President/Athletic Director

Since Robert G. Driscoll was hired as the Associate Vice President for Athletics on November 2, 2001, Providence College athletics has experienced unprecedented growth in academic and athletic performance, fundraising, facilities and community involvement. Driscoll has reinvigorated the Providence College Athletics program, leading the charge with a vision of creating one of the most respected programs in the nation, where each student- graduates and has the opportunity to compete for championships. Driscoll was recognized for his efforts on June 10, 2008 as he was named the 2007-08 Astro Turf Athletics Director of the Year for Division I Northeast Region at the 43rd National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Annual Convention. The 2007-08 season proved to be another banner year for the Friars. In August of 2007, the Concannon Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art $15 million facility, was opened. The Concannon Fitness Center is adjacent to the recently completed $6 million Friar Field Hockey & Complex. The new Fitness Center houses the Friars’ varsity weight room as well as administrative and coaching offices, conference rooms and locker rooms. The construction project also provides the department with a state-of-the-art sports medicine complex and a new ticket office. The Canavan Sports Medicine Facility, which was completed in August of 2008, is equipped with a hydrotherapy room, which includes a SwimEx rehab pool and two plunges for cold/hot therapy. The construction also continues beyond the friendly confines of the College. Over the past three years Driscoll has worked strategically with lead of- ficials in the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island to help spearhead a $75 million renovation of the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, which is home to the Friar men’s team. Renovations began in the spring of 2006 and were completed in September 2008. The Dunkin’ Donuts Center is once again a state-of-the-art facility that will seat more than 13,000 fans. Renovations have enhanced the game-day experience by adding 20 luxury boxes, new seats, video scoreboard, sound system, updated restaurant and concession stands, team store, locker rooms and new weight training and fitness areas. The renovations have already reaped benefits for the College, the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island, as Providence was awarded the first and second rounds of the 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. Many of the College’s athletic improvements were made possible through Driscoll’s fundraising efforts. In each of the six years that Driscoll has led the Friars, the athletic department has exceeded its fundraising goals and has generated over $8 million that has been utilized for student-athlete development and facility enhancements. Driscoll is currently a member of the NCAA Championship Committee. He also represents the BIG EAST’s Athletic Directors on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and serves on the HOCKEY EAST Television Negotiations Committee. He previously served on the NCAA Division I Management Council and was an NCAA Fellows Programs Executive Mentor. 2008 Friar Women’s Soccer - 2 THIS IS PROVIDENCE COLLEGE

Responding to the needs of Rhode Island, the Dominican Order of Preachers made a special commitment to the state in 1917 and founded Providence College; the only institution of higher learning in North America that is conducted by the Order. In 91 years, Providence College has steadily moved to a position of national prominence, while maintaining a personal, community-like atmosphere that fosters growth and development among its student population. Providence College’s rich heritage dates back to 1216, or the origins of the Dominican Order in Spain. Through the ages, the Dominican Friars became known as the “champions of the faith,” spread- ing the gospel message through the centuries into every corner of the globe. Today, Dominican Friars continue to spread the gospel in a wide range of remote areas of the world, including Kenya, Nigeria and the Solomon Islands, as well as to teach at every level of the United States educational system. With the Dominican tradition as its foundation, Providence College focuses on developing the entire person through its values-oriented education. The college seeks to complement a student’s knowledge with knowledge of his own values, values that will remain the foundation for sound judge- ment throughout a lifetime. To that end, Providence College aims to relate its curriculum to the problems of contemporary society, offering diverse programs of study that remain grounded in the liberal arts. Providence College students may choose from some sixty concentrations ranging from computer science, to labor relations, to theatre arts. In addition, qualified students who wish to structure a program not specifically provided under the regular concentrations may develop their own program with the approval of the dean of the college.

2008 Friar Women’s Soccer - 4 2008 SEASON PREVIEW

With six seniors leading an already experienced squad, the Providence College women’s soccer team returns to the pitch for the 2008 season with a strong desire to succeed in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars suffered through an injury plagued 2007 season, but Head Coach Jim McGirr has his team determined to win. Up front, the Friars have an experienced forward line with seniors Victoria Neff (Fairfield, Conn.) and Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.). Juniors Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.), Caitlin Hostetler (Portsmouth, R.I.), and Greta Houlihan (Belair, Md.) should help solidfy the Friar attack. Camburn, who during her first season led the Friars in goals with five and shots with 36, missed the majority of last season with an ankle injury. Hostetler recorded her first Friar goal at St. John’s on October 28. Houlihan tallied her first goal as well last season and it proved to be the game winner against Rutgers on October 7. Sophomore Kylie Ricker (Leominster, Mass.) transferred to PC from Maryland this season and should be a strong contributor. Her classmate Jackie Pastor (Langhorne, Pa.) contributed strong minutes along the Friar front last season and will also be asked to contribute on defense. Also joining the squad this season is freshman Taylor Bartini (Suffield, Conn.), who scored 86 goals and had 43 assists during her high school campaign. The PC midfield is anchored by a strong returning cast including sophomores Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.). Benko finished first on the team in shots last season with 24 and tied for first in assists with two. Ricciardi scored her first goal as a Friar last season in the victory over Pittsburgh on October 14. Sophomores Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Lindsey Trubia (Mystic, Conn.) will also get significant playing time. Three freshmen join the Friar midfield and will be looked upon to make large contributions. Emily Castle (Stonington, Conn.) scored 14 goals and had 26 assists during her high school career and helped lead her teams to three state cups. Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) was named to the First Team All-League squad on two occasions while scoring 24 goals and tallying 39 assists. Laura DiClemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) scored 30 goals and 58 assists while earning numerous honors, including All-Region and Southeastern PA First Team. The Providence defensive front should be the strongest area on the pitch. The defense is led by seniors Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) and Megan Man- carella (Rochester, N.Y.). Gent has eight assists in her Friar career including two last season. Mancarella scored the game-tying goal against UMass last season, on September 2. Junior Katelin Blaine (Warwick, N.Y.) returns from a knee injury that kept her sidelined for the second half of last season and should solidify the back line. Sophomore Marra Whaley (Rocky Hill, Conn.) played extremely well last season for the Friars and recorded the game winning-goal against Hartford on September 14. After losing starting goalkeeper Laura Elfers to graduation, the Friars will look for two new faces to step up between the posts. Sophomore Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) appeared in one game for PC last season. She will be joined by freshman Caitlin Walker (Metuchen, N.J.) in goal. With a healthy squad and high expectations, the Friars will look to join the BIG EAST elite this season. McGirr has brought in three strong recruiting classes and will start the 2008 season with a renewed sense of enthusiasm.
