Compositions from all four members THIS WORLD is the stunning debut release from a brand new collaborative band formed by four of Australia’s most established and celebrated improvisers. Exceptionally recorded in pristine 9 345195 012232 high definition stereo and produced with meticulous care it features a diverse program of nine exciting new compositions, all created specifically for this album. In December 2018 they gathered in the basement of a cosy inner-Sydney restaurant to play two sets of jazz standards for an intimate but enthusiastic crowd. It was Nock’s first gig after a six month break and the joy and vitality of his return to live performance was palpable. Despite having enjoyed established relationships with each other in a variety of formats this marked their first performance as a quartet and the four-way chemistry was immediately evident. Six months later they performed four consecutive shows in Sydney immediately followed by two days recording at Sony Studios with engineer Ross A’Hern. The result is THIS WORLD. The shared history and personal connection between them is present in every note. ABOUT THE MUSICIANS: Individually they have worked with some of the greatest musicians in the world: Coleman Hawkins, Pharoah Sanders, Hugh Masekala, Ian Moss, Yusef Lateef, Hermeto Pascoal, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Don Walker. All four players have a strong sense of tradition and history but are equally known for having one foot firmly planted towards the future. New Zealand born pianist/composer Mike Nock (ONZM) is one of the acknowledged masters of jazz in Australasia. Based in Sydney since 1986, he previously spent 25 years in the USA. He is a recipient of the Don Banks Music Award and in inductee of the Australian Jazz Bell Awards Hall of Fame. Mike has released a plethora of critically acclaimed albums under his own name on many international labels including his own label FWM. Jonathan Zwartz (also originally from NZ) and Sydney native Hamish Stuart form one of Australia’s great musical partnerships. For 30 years they have run the Starfish Club together along Sydney’s eastern beaches and are the first-call rhythm section for a who’s-who of the Australian music industry and international touring acts. Their simpatico and hook-up is legendary. Zwartz' own albums regularly top best-seller lists and have won numerous awards including an ARIA, an AIR Award and a handful of Australian Jazz Bell Awards. Melbourne saxophonist Julien Wilson has been awarded almost every major accolade in Australian jazz, including the National Jazz Award, The Freedman Fellowship for Jazz, an APRA/ AMCOS Art Music Award, and a “Bell” Award for Australian Jazz Musician of the Year.     CHAPTER 9 The Sun and Moon Have Come Together: The Fourth Way, the Counterculture, and Capitol Records Kevin Fellezs ormed in 1968, musical group The Fourth Way was among the first bands to merge rock, jazz, and non-Western musical approaches in a way that mir- rored the mixed-race membership of the band—white New Zealander pianist FMike Nock, black American violinist Michael White, white American bassist Ron McClure, and black American drummer Eddie Marshall—a notable feature at the time. The band’s eponymous debut and their second release, a live recording titled The Sun and Moon Have Come Together , were recorded in the fall of 1969. Their final recording, Werwolf , was a live recording of their appearance in the 1970 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. However, with the exception of a small number of dates clustered around the band’s appearance in Montreux, The Fourth Way rarely per- formed outside of the San Francisco Bay Area, limiting their exposure. My focus in this chapter is to think through the ways in which The Fourth Way, a relatively unknown band working in the same geographic area and within the same countercultural milieu as more famous bands associated with the hippie sub- culture such as the Grateful Dead, enacted these countercultural ideals even more forcefully than their more visible peers. I am interested especially with the ways in which the band dealt with inclusive notions of belonging and an interest in hetero- dox spiritual practices that were articulated through their genre mixtures that would bear fruit in the following decades in musical styles that would come to be known as fusion (jazz-rock/funk), world music, and new age.

    INTERVIEW WITH THE WILLOW NEILSON QUARTET by Eric Myers ________________________________________________________ [Editor ‘s Note: The Sydney quartet led by the saxophonist Willow Neilson left in late September, 2001, to participate in the Jazz Hoeilaart Inter’l Belgium, an international jazz contest for youth ensembles. Other than Willow, the group includes Gerard Masters (piano, from Christchurch, New Zealand)), Brendan Clarke (double bass, from Canberra), and the Sydney drummer Craig Simon. The views of these young musicians on music and the jazz scene reflect the mixture of optimism and realism which characterises many of the musicians of their generation. The four musicians are all in their early to mid-20s. This interview appeared in the Oct/Nov 01 edition of Jazzchord.] Eric Myers: I am wondering what it’s like to be a young musician, or an “emerging artist”. What is the general feeling amongst players of your age in your early 20s? Willow Neilson: I think there is a general positivity amongst the younger players in the scene at the moment, in spite of there only being a small number of venues in Sydney. When I moved to Sydney It was just before the string of tragedies that hit the jazz scene - the closing of the Strawberry Hills, etc. For a while there it was very depressing being a young musician in Sydney.
