The first super typhoon of the season, Typhoon Surigae, hit the eastern part of the Philippines in the second half of April and is the strongest to form in the before May.

The typhoon, locally known as Bising, didn’t make landfall but still brought strong winds and heavy rain, with gusts up to 190 mph at the peak OVER 50 KM2 of the storm above sea and rainfall records of 8 to 12 inches on land1. From of the observed area April 17th to 21st, more than 160,000 people were evacuated from coastal was flooded areas and a total of nearly 230,000 people were affected according to the Philippines National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council2. Thousands of homes were damaged and 63 cities suffered power outages.

ICEYE had been monitoring the typhoon for flood potential for several days and acquired 6 satellite images over 3 flooded areas on Samar Island 30 between April 18th and 20th. The near real-time analysis of the observed SETTLEMENTS areas showed that approximately 50 km2 were inundated with water were affected within the depths averaging 2.25 m. By overlapping its output extent with the 3 observed area with the largest Global Urban Footprint database , ICEYE also identified 30 settlements impacted town, Jipapad, having were affected by the flood. 8,000 residents
