Preface

My goal in writing this genealogy is to eventually have a hard copy printed and donated to the historical society and/or library of Bradford, Vermont. In the meantime, I am publishing my draft online, in hopes that some other descendants may see it and provide more information. I have added some unidentified photographs which are probably of Aldrich family members. I can be reached at [email protected].

Descendants of Richard Aldrich and Anna Maynard

1. RICHARD ALDRICH was born 8 Apr 1780, in Bradford, Vt.1 He was the son of Silas Aldrich and Alice Collins. He married, in Bradford, on 16 Oct 1801, ANNA MAYNARD.2 She was born 10 Oct 1779, in Northboro, Mass., and was the daughter of Levi Maynard and Esther Savage.3

Anna is said to have been left without a mother "at an early age."4 She came to Bradford when she was 16 years old as a companion for the wife of a Mr. Norcross. Mrs. Norcross became homesick and left her husband, at which time Mr. Norcross asked Anna to remain and "keep house." "No, sir, I will see you in the bottomless pit first!" she reportedly replied. She was taken into the family of Esquire Peters, "where young Richard Aldrich found her and easily persuaded her to become his wife."5

Richard Aldrich inherited the family homestead in the Goshen district of Bradford. According to the town history, "His advantages in youth for school education were very limited, but the lessons of industry, frugality, kindness to the suffering, and of heroic patriotism in which he was thoroughly drilled, had much to do in forming the character for which he was distinguished in after life." He was active in local affairs, holding several town offices. He served after 1807 as Captain of the Second Company of the First Regiment of the State Militia. In 1832 he donated land adjacent to his residence for construction of what is now known as the Old Goshen Church.

According to the history of Bradford, Richard and Anna Aldrich "were industrious, hard-working people, and it is believed that the destitute and hungry never applied to them for relief in vain. They both became hopefully pious in the maturity of their powers, and united with what was then styled the Christian church, and so remained during their subsequent lives."6 Richard died 25 Nov 1856, in Bradford. Anna died 28 Mar 1875, at age 95. They are buried in the Bradford (Upper Plain) cemetery.7

1 Vermont Vital Records. His father is given as Silas Aldrich and mother as Alice. His birth date also given by McKeen, cited below. 2 Vermont Vital Records. She is called Anna “Minard.” 3 Vital records of Northborough, Mass., to the end of the year 1850 (1901). 4 Esther (Savage) Maynard’s death date is unknown. In 1792 she gave birth to her 12th child, when Anna was about 13. If Anna came to Bradford after the death of her mother, that would mean that Esther must have died between 1792 and 1795. 5 McKeen, History of Bradford, Vt., p. 312- 313. 6 Ibid., p. 314. 7 findagrave.com: Richard Aldrich and findagrave.com: Anna Aldrich

POTTER, 23 Apr 1873 in Jackson, Ia. Lydia was born about 1831 in N.Y.

According to the History of Bradford, Vt., “He lived for some while in Corinth (Vt.), engaged in farming; then moved to Northumberland, N.H., where he and his wife united, on profession of their faith, with the Methodist E. church. He almost at once felt it his duty to preach, and set about it in the fear of God. As a preacher he has endeavored to declare the truth, without attempting any great display of rhetorical eloquence. About 1854 he went West, where he has since been preaching.” He moved to Wisconsin and is listed on the 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses there.75

According to the History of Osceola County, Ia., “In June 1871, Rev. Smith Aldrich arrived in the county and settled in Section 30, west Holman. When it became known that Aldrich was a preacher, it was thought best to have services the following Sunday, so E. Morris and some others went around to what few there were and gave out the notice. The preaching was in Morrison and Churchill’s shack. There were about twenty-five present, and his sermon, no doubt, was the first preached in the county, though W. W. Webb claims that some other was the first. In the fall of 1871, Mrs. Aldrich, wife of the reverend gentlemen, died on their claim. This was the first death in the county, and at that the undertaker’s shop was far away, so that Mr. A. M. Culver made the coffin and Mrs. John Douglass stained it with grape juice. The simple services at the funeral were impressive, for Mrs. Aldrich was a woman much respected. Her body was removed east some time after its burial here, and Mr. Aldrich himself went away after remaining here a few years.”76

His death date has not been found, although it must have been after 1900. A Lydia J. Aldrich, widow of Smith, is found on a 1907 Los Angeles city directory.

Appendix I: Letters

Edwin Aldrich to Eliza Ann Aldrich

Cambridge, August 28 – 1831

I now have an opportunity to write to you, and inform you that I am well and in good health. I want you to make me a frock and send it by Mr. Blood the next time he comes down if you possibly can. I want you should send me some footings some time this fall. And I want you to tell father to send me a pair of boots as soon as he can. A good pair.

Polly wants you should send those things to Miss Parker if you have not. I have not time to write much now. Give my love to Amanda and tell her that I am glad to hear that she has left Marm (?) Williams + tell her that I should be glad to have her write a few lines to me if she is disposed to write when Mr. Blood comes again if you can.

Edwin R. Aldrich

Eliza Ann Aldrich

Almira (Aldrich) Hazeltine to Eliza Ann (Aldrich) Brown

Haverhill May 24th 1835

Dear Sister,

I take the present opportunity to inform you that we are all in good health at present. Doubtless you have been disappointed in not seeing Mother211 to your house the first of the month as you expected. She was taken sick, on the first day of the month and was quite sick a few days and then got able to be about the house again till one week ago to day when she was taken worse with a severe pain in her side and was sicker for about thirty six hours than ever she was before in her life but she is some better now. I was over there last Friday and she wished to have me write to you and let you know how she has been and said she should come and see you if she should ever be able but said it

211 Anna (Maynard) Aldrich, who was 55 at the time, and would live 40 more years.

Draft 18 Feb 2020 is very uncertain --- but I rather think she will she was not in any pain when I was there and was able to set up a little. Lydia was there at the same time I was they are all well. William, Ransom and Edwin’s folks are all well Miss Martin is sick and I think likely she will not live a great while – Probably you have heard of Chastina Muzzey’s212 death as she died about a month ago and Mr. Colby has been down since and I thought likely he went by your house. John Muzzey213 has been very sick to Ransoms214 but he has got better and gone home. William215 has bought Mr. D. Johnson’s farm and Ransom expects to have Mr. Thomas Corley’s but don’t know certain yet. Sally Ann216 says I must write that she wants to see Mary Anna217 and Sarah218 says she wants to see Aunt Eliza. I have no particular news to write respecting my situation and I find it to be no very desirable task to tend a tollgate. I hope you will come up and visit as soon as you can and write as soon as you receive this – but I must close my letter wishing you health and prosperity – Almira Haseltine.

Eliza Ann Brown

212 Chastina Muzzey was born 13 Jun 1810 and was daughter of John Muzzey and Betsey Aldrich, thus a first cousin to Almira and Eliza. She died 17 Apr 1835 in Newbury, Vt. 213 Younger brother of Chastina; John Muzzey Jr. (1817-1884). 214 Their brother, Richard Ransom Aldrich (1810-1887). 215 Their brother William Aldrich (1808-1900). 216 I’m not clear who this is. 217 Eliza’s daughter Mary Ann Brown, who was 2 ½. 218 Almira’s daughter Sarah, who was 9.

Appendix 2: Unidentified Photos

These two Carte De Viste (CDV) small photographs were probably taken between 1860 and 1883, in the studio of E. H. Allen, Bradford, Vt. They are undoubtedly a couple, perhaps a child of Richard and Anna Aldrich and their spouse.

Draft 18 Feb 2020

Another two Carte De Viste (CDV) small photographs, probably taken between 1860 and 1883, in the studio of E. H. Allen, Bradford, Vt. Are they Levi Haseltine and Almira (Aldrich) Haseltine? (This is just a guess.)

48

Draft 18 Feb 2020

These two photos, also taken in Bradford Vt., at the studio of E. H. Allen, were found in Mary Ann (Brown) Pratt’s album on the same page. Perhaps they are sisters?
