2012 annual report

Opening the door to greater educational opportunities since 1963.

50TH ANNIVERSARY Letter from the president & Board Chair

In 1963, at the height of the civil rights movement, 23 headmasters of selective independent schools made a mutual commitment to change the profiles and compositions of their student bodies. Through A Better Chance, they would broaden their enrollment to include students of color who were academically able but economically disadvantaged. Chosen for their motivation and demonstrated achievement, 55 students from low-income families were selected to complete their secondary at these founding independent schools. And today in 2013, as we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we remain committed to launching talented students on the path to leadership by providing access to outstanding educational opportunities. In 2012, we helped 543 students gain admission to more than 300 of this nation’s most rigorous boarding, day and public schools. We also offered academic and enrichment programs including New Scholar Orientation, career development workshops and international travel and study opportunities for the Scholars enrolled in A Better Chance Member Schools. In Sandra E. Timmons the summer, we took Scholars on a week-long tour of some of the most selective colleges and universities in the country, further preparing them for continued academic and professional success after high school. Our more than 13,000 Alumni, who are the legacy of A Better Chance, continue to pass forward the opportunities they received through their generous contributions of time, talent and resources. For the third straight year, the Pass It Forward Alumni fund exceeded its goal for Alumni giving. Our Alumni have also come out in record numbers for volunteer opportunities. While we look forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary milestone, we recognize the continued relevance and urgency of our mission. Now is the time to be bold in our efforts to fill the pipeline of leaders of color in this country. By 2050, it is predicted that the non-white population will become the majority in the , yet even today the composition of our leadership in business, government, medicine and other fields is far from a proportionate representation of the population at large. There is an absence of a self-sustaining leadership pipeline for people of color. We must invest in the talented youth of today, or risk closing off an Ronald R. Pressman entire generation from the pathways to leadership and success. We must act now to position our society for a vibrant future by creating the leaders our country needs. We could not have accomplished what we have in the past 50 years without the steadfast support of our many partners, friends and Alumni. Thank you for your continued investment in our Scholars and our vital work. With your help, we are confident we will reach our goal of having 3,500 Scholars enrolled annually by 2020. Together, we will continue to strengthen the pipeline of diverse leaders by helping talented but underserved students realize their immense leadership potential, and by doing so help position our society for great success ahead.

“Fortunately for me, someone in my hometown recognized some kind of academic prowess and leadership ability in me that was being unrecognized and surely unchallenged. It was very easy to overlook someone like myself amongst the multitudes of youngsters in a big city. And at the same time, I was too young to realize how much more potential there really was. One of my favorite quotes in life is, ‘Potential is something that never was.’

A Better Chance catapulted me into a different world, a very long distance from everything that I knew: my neighborhood, family, friends, my favorite diamond, and my mom’s rice and beans. I can tell you that the A Better Chance program was the toughest obstacle course I have ever had to encounter. As an Alumnus now, I feel compelled to take on this responsibility to influence and assist new Scholars on a daily basis. As a result of my personal background and the way I was raised, I can see how I can provide a positive influence in my family, community and culture.”

Supporters of A Better Chance

A Better Chance’s work would not be possible without the generous support of its donors and partners. In fiscal year 2012, Alumni and friends of the organization had the opportunity to make their contributions in the following ways: Individuals either joined or renewed their DreamBuilder membership by pledging to donate at least $1,200 a year. Launched in 2008, the DreamBuilder Program is A Better Chance’s major donor giving society. Those who have joined are part of an esteemed group who recognize the organization’s tremendous legacy and impact and share our enduring commitment to helping talented youth of color. A Better Chance also appreciates its many Institutional Funders that have shown their support in the form of grants to help fund our signature College Preparatory Schools Program. The National Partnership Program enables companies to sponsor The A Better Chance Awards—our single biggest event of the year—and provide year-round funding of our programmatic activities. The 2012 A Better Chance Awards Luncheon took place on June 1, and the organization recognized leaders who have demonstrated a serious commitment to supporting education and diversity. Five hundred supporters, Alumni and Scholars saluted our honored guests: the 2012 A Better Chance Scholar award winners and Kenneth Chenault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Express. We thank the following donors and partners for investing in our Scholars. Working together, we can make the future that much brighter for each and every one of them.

A Better Chance Alumna Nadja Bellan-White A Better Chance Scholar 1982 • Kimball Union Academy 1985 BA University of Virginia 1989 MBA NYU Stern School of Business 1994 Senior Partner/Managing Director, Ogilvy & Mather

“A Better Chance provided me with a world of options I would never have had before. My mom had four kids and needed all of us to ‘pull ourselves up by our bootstraps’ to succeed. She has always instilled the importance of a good education and knew that A Better Chance made the difference between becoming just another ‘statistic’ and really doing something with your life.

I will be honest, my experience was not an easy adjustment — Queens, NY and Meriden, NH are worlds apart — but I always had a greater goal. I missed my family and friends tremendously, but everyone knew that ‘Nadja and Maurice’ (my brother joined me a year later) had greater goals.

I would not have gone on to UVA, the Stern School of Business or achieved any of my career goals without A Better Chance. It was more than an educational opportunity, it changed my life.”
