2012 annual report Opening the door to greater educational opportunities since 1963. 50TH ANNIVERSARY LetteRfRomthepResident&BoARdChAiR in1963,attheheightofthecivilrightsmovement,23headmastersofselectiveindependent schoolsmadeamutualcommitmenttochangetheprofilesandcompositionsoftheirstudent bodies.throughABetterChance,theywouldbroadentheirenrollmenttoincludestudentsof colorwhowereacademicallyablebuteconomicallydisadvantaged.Chosenfortheirmotivation anddemonstratedachievement,55studentsfromlow-incomefamilieswereselectedto completetheirsecondaryeducationatthesefoundingindependentschools. Andtodayin2013,aswecelebrateour50thanniversary,weremaincommittedtolaunching talentedstudentsonthepathtoleadershipbyprovidingaccesstooutstandingeducational opportunities.in2012,wehelped543studentsgainadmissiontomorethan300ofthisnation’s mostrigorousboarding,dayandpublicschools.Wealsoofferedacademicandenrichment programsincludingnewscholarorientation,careerdevelopmentworkshopsandinternational travelandstudyopportunitiesforthescholarsenrolledinABetterChancememberschools.in Sandra E. Timmons thesummer,wetookscholarsonaweek-longtourofsomeofthemostselectivecollegesand universitiesinthecountry,furtherpreparingthemforcontinuedacademicandprofessional successafterhighschool. ourmorethan13,000Alumni,whoarethelegacyofABetterChance,continuetopass forwardtheopportunitiestheyreceivedthroughtheirgenerouscontributionsoftime,talent andresources.forthethirdstraightyear,thepassitforwardAlumnifundexceededitsgoalfor Alumnigiving.ourAlumnihavealsocomeoutinrecordnumbersforvolunteeropportunities. Whilewelookforwardtocelebratingour50thanniversarymilestone,werecognizethe continuedrelevanceandurgencyofourmission.nowisthetimetobeboldinoureffortsto fillthepipelineofleadersofcolorinthiscountry.By2050,itispredictedthatthenon-white populationwillbecomethemajorityintheUnitedstates,yeteventodaythecompositionof ourleadershipinbusiness,government,medicineandotherfieldsisfarfromaproportionate representationofthepopulationatlarge.thereisanabsenceofaself-sustainingleadership pipelineforpeopleofcolor.Wemustinvestinthetalentedyouthoftoday,orriskclosingoffan Ronald R. Pressman entiregenerationfromthepathwaystoleadershipandsuccess.Wemustactnowtopositionour societyforavibrantfuturebycreatingtheleadersourcountryneeds. To date, we work with more than 300 such institutions committed to educating young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society. Approximately a third of our schools have partnered with us for more than 35 years. Our Member Schools are the life blood of our work, steadfast in the idea that a better education leads to a better life, and exemplifying that commitment by accepting approximately 550 new A Better Chance Scholars each year.
