Connecting a Windows to a , 8, or 10 PC using Windows Mobile Device Center

Transferring data files to/from a Windows Mobile based device from a Windows PC requires Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC). Without this program Trimble Data Transfer Utility will not be able to connect to the mobile device and files cannot be transferred to/from the device via USB. This document includes instructions on how to download and install WMDC and how to establish a connection with the PC via USB connection.

1. On your PC go to the , right click on Computer and go to Properties

2. Under the System section note how many bits your is (32 bit or 64 bit)

1 3. On your PC open a and navigate to one of the following:

64 bit System: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3182 32 bit System: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14

4. Click the Download button.

5. The file should automatically download on the following page. If you are asked to save or run the file choose the save option. The default download location for Windows 7 and 8 is My Documents -> Down- loads..

2 6. Navigate to and double click the downloaded file named either drvupdate-amd64 or drvupdate-amd32 depending on the version.

7. Complete the installation of the WMDC software by following the installation instructions. Install the program using the default settings and installation location (C:/).

8. Turn on your Windows Mobile based device.

9. On the mobile device navigate to Start-> Settings-> Connections.

10. In the Connections menu open USB to PC. Uncheck the checkbox beside “Enable advanced network functionality” then click OK.

11. Connect the mobile device to the PC via USB data cable. (make sure the unit is turned on).

12. In the Windows task bar you will see the pop up message listed below. The installation may take a few minutes.

13. Once installed a message should appear stating that the device driver software was successful,. • If the device driver software installation fails, disconnect the device from the PC and return to step 10. Check the box for “Enable advanced network functionality” and repeat steps 11 and 12.

14. Once the device driver software is successfully installed Windows Mobile Device Center should auto- matically open. If the program does not automatically open go to Start -> All Programs -> Windows Mo- bile Device Center.

15. In the Windows Mobile Device Software the status on the bottom left should say connected. If not, dis- connect the device from the PC and reconnect.

16. Click the option to “Connect without setting up my device”.

4 17. Leave Windows Mobile Device Center open, but the screen can be minimized.

18. Open Trimble Data Transfer Utility by using one of the following methods:

Stand alone installation: Start -> All Programs -> Trimble Data Transfer -> Data Transfer

Through Pathfinder Office : Start -> All Programs -> Trimble -> GPS Pathfinder Office -> Pathfinder Of- fice -> Utilities -> Data Transfer *If you do not have Data Transfer Utility it can be downloaded from http://www.trimble.com/datatransfer/

19. Set the Device drop down menu to GIS Datalogger on Windows Mobile. If the device does not auto- matically connect click the green check button next to the device drop down.
