This a story about my friend Sebastian Sabourin from Sabattus and I, Sonny Scarborough, when we were taking a sabbatical from Sabattus one late Spring day back in 2017. We were heading down the hill known as Old Orchard Street, in Old Orchard Beach, of course, walking past stores and food places that were selling items we never even knew we needed until then. We kept leisurely strolling along until we got to where the hot top meets the sand. All of a sudden, Seb stopped like he had seen a ghost. “What’s ailing you, Seb?” I asked. “Sonny, d-d-d you hear what’ I’m hearing?” he asked. Now before you get all wound up in this story, you need to know about Seb. Seb is an A-number-one musician. His skill playing the kazoo has brought him local, county, state, and New England honors. At six-foot ten, one- hundred and thirty- eight pounds of prime Maine man, he has a skill of recreating any music he hears, partly due to his cast-iron skillet-sized ears. He can hear a tune anywhere, from the St. John’s Valley in The County to the Piscataqua River Bridge, and immediately play it on his kazoo, hand-carved from a nineteen forty-eight push reel lawnmower, in its entirety without missing as much as a quarter rest. All this while carrying and playing his homemade zither! In fact, the greatest honor accorded to Seb is being named Perpetual Grand Marshall of the Sabattus St. Swithin’s Day Parade, Firemen’s Muster, Unfortunately, its 182’ by 66’ ballroom met its demise in 1968, as it was and Quahog Bake-off since 1967.
