Billy Idol, One of the Worlds Most Recognizable Rock Stars, Achieved Fame in the 1970S As a Member of the British Punk Rock Band Generation X IDOLIDOLXX Billy Idol, one of the worlds most recognizable rock stars, achieved fame in the 1970s as a member of the British punk rock band Generation X. In 1981, Idol embarked on a solo career which led to international success with critically acclaimed multi-platinum albums and hit songs such as Dancing With Myself, White Wedding, Rebel Yell and Eyes Without A Face, Billy Idol soon became the face of the rebellious rock-n-roll and punk scene in America. IDOL X pays tribute to the music of Billy Idol and Generation X with the collaboration of Matthew Eberhart on vocals, and the renowned guitarist Robert Sarzo on lead guitar. Matthew Eberhart played bass for the Colorado based band, Myzar, touring and opening for acts such as Icehouse and Richard Marx. Matthew formed the New York City punk band Motor Betty, which became a regular headliner at the infamous CBGS’s and was featured on 92.3 KROCK, the Warp Tour (2000 & 2001) and was chosen as one of the top 50 unsigned bands in America by CMJ, Coca-Cola Music and Dick Clark Productions in August of 2001 just prior to 9/11. Matthew has worked with producers such as Hillary Johnson (Ramones, Misfits, Jeff Buckley) and Don Fury (Agnostic Front, Helmet, Quicksand, Sick Of It All). Matthew is endorsed by Audix microphones. Robert Sarzo, also known as the VuDu Man, has worked and toured internationally with artists such as D.L Byron, Hurricane, and Queensryche GT. Robert has worked with legendary producers such as Jimmy Iovine, Bob Ezrin, Mike Clink, Robert Stigwood (Saturday Night Fever & Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts). Robert is fully Endorsed by Godin Guitars, ChromaCast/Sawtooth Music Gear, Soundbrenner, Galaxy Audio In Ear Monitors, Peterson Tuners, and Cleartone Strings. Matthew and Robert form the perfect Billy Idol & Steve Stevens combo, delivering Billy Idol music to near perfection while entertaining the crowds. They also enjoy performing at local venues in and around Los Angeles doing a combination of classic rock covers and Idol hits with Billy Idol’s bassist of 20 years, Stephen McGrath as part of 80 Proof Vudu. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

T h E H appy ScuibE H anukkah University of Bridgeport Vol. 3, No. 10 December 1,1983 2 5 cents Wahlstrom on Trial by Donna Ditchkus Professor Justus vein der Kroef, chairman of the political science department, said he feels UB isn’t spending enough money on new library books. “Fair- field University,” he said, “has fewer students and is spending more overall on available information than we are in terms of total number of students . We are not maintaining a rate of purchase in proportion to students. “We must also define what kind of university we are going to be, and put that emphasis on the library plan ning,” he said. He also said that not enough is being of fered now in the way of book sources, periodicals and other necessary information. He also said, funds must still be available for programs that are only supportive and not primary. In order to have a long-range plan, he said, a decision must be made as to what type of information will have a primary emphasis on certain professional colleges or only a sup portive and minimal emphasis. But we must first deter mine what the long-range plan will emphasize regarding the future of the university. “We must develop a library in light of the long-range plan . If we are to keep on a number of basic pro grams in the humanities department—for example, the Capstone program or Psychology—then we need to maintain journals and books on the subject,” he said. According to van der Kroef, we were behind three years ago, and again two years ago.
