INTRODUCTION (fable I). The diagnosis was based on autopy in 94%o£the cases of alcohol poisoning. 74%orthose Consumption or alcoholic beverages, and strong or alcoholism, 40% of the li....:r cirrhosis cases and drinks in particular, is known to be high in Finnish 43% or the pallCIUtitis cases. A forensic autopsy Lapland. An earlier n:port by the present autlDr was performed on every case or alcohol poisoning, also showed mortality Crom violent causes to be implying tbat the blood alcohol concentration was considerably higher than normal in this area (1 ). As practiallly always determined in such cases. alcohol is a £actor in violent deaths, a further in\'C!i· ligation was carried out to determine the level of METHODS alcohol mortality and its variations in Lapland. Thus, drink ing will cause mortality to rise pmgnssivcly by age in populations rontaining large numbers or heavy drinkers, while this effect may be wtaker in "nor mal" populations. In chronic alcoholism, on the other hand, the pathological process leading to death also involves long-term changes in the vital otgans and is less dependent on the toxic effects of alcohol as such. Local iDvestigations suggest that the daily con sumption of alcohol is twice as high in the northern parts of Lapland as elsewhere (5), a distnoution consistent with the present obselvation oC an llCCU· mvlation of fatal akobol poisonings. Together with earlier findings of a similar accumulation oC male violent deaths (1), the present results point to an inoased ~nee oC social malaise in northern Upland
