FRIDAY 1– SUNDAY 3 APRIL 2016 SINGING STORIES SUCH THE TENORMAN TOLD

President: Elly Ameling Honorary Patrons: CBE Graham Johnson OBE, Richard Stokes Roderick Williams Artistic Director Joseph Middleton Director Jane Anthony Founder leedslieder.org.uk Follow us on Twitter: @LeedsLieder ‘...one of the most exuberant and far–reaching festivals of art-song in the UK.’ 2 SINGING

STORIES Joseph Middleton SUCH THE TENORMAN TOLD What a pleasure it is to be writing an introduction to the first Festival that I am overseeing as Director of this very special organisation. Before I was appointed, I already knew that the Artistic Director of the 2016 Festival would be Roderick Williams - universally loved by colleagues and audiences alike. It will come as no surprise to anyone who has attended one of Roddy’s recitals, or dipped in and out of his award-winning discography, that he would choose ‘storytelling’ as a theme for the weekend, for he is the master in the art of communicating sung text. We have assembled what I hope you’ll agree is a mouthwatering line-up of artists: The internationally acclaimed jostle alongside rising stars and we celebrate young singers and pianists by providing platforms on which they can perform. Our President, the celebrated soprano Elly Ameling, will appear in conversation with Sony Award-winning broadcaster, and past Leeds Lieder Artistic Director, Iain Burnside. The spoken word will be juxtaposed alongside the sung, as we welcome actors Rory Kinnear, Victoria Newlyn and Jo Blake Cave to hold a mirror up to the words being set by the great composers here represented. Education will also once again be at the heart of the Festival’s activities. Hundreds of schoolchildren will be involved in our song projects over the next few months and representatives from the country’s top conservatoires will appear in masterclasses and performance platforms. Drawing from the treasure-chest of great western art song, leading exponents such as Mark Padmore, Katarina Karnéus, the Myrthen Ensemble and Julius Drake will appear in Leeds and we have added to the gloriously rich canon of song repertoire by commissioning two new song cycles by Cheryl Frances-Hoad and Edward Rushton. A programme for local composers and poets will produce yet more delights. The past year has seen great change at Leeds Lieder as we now programme a season-long series of recitals together with the Howard Assembly Room at Opera North, University of Leeds and Leeds College of Music. The success of these recitals, hosting some superb artists to share music with the audiences of the North, has given us much optimism for the future, as has receiving acceptances from Sarah Connolly CBE, Graham Johnson OBE and Richard Stokes to become our Patrons. That these illustrious names wish to lend their international reputation to our party is an honour indeed. Programming such excellence on the concert platform, commissioning new works and running extensive education projects comes at a price however, and this cannot be covered by ticket sales alone. Leeds Lieder exists and is run in the most frugal of ways, committed as we are to putting all our resources into the music-making we wish to champion. Coming to the Directorship of Leeds Lieder via my day-job as a pianist, I have been overwhelmed by the philanthropic support we receive from individuals and trusts, without whom, Leeds Lieder would cease to exist. I hope you will enjoy reading more of what our audiences will experience next April, and I hope you’ll join us in person and consider offering your support to this great tradition of music-making by becoming a Friend. You’ll be made most welcome! Full details of all the songs in the concerts listed in this brochure can be found on our website www.leedslieder.org.uk Our thanks go to the many Friends, Patrons and supporters whose generosity enables us to present this festival. Iain Burnside discusses his reworking of Brahms’s Die schöne Magelone Iain Burnside

Sunday 3 April 6.30pm The Venue, Leeds College of Music Celebrity Recital: Shining Armour Roderick Williams baritone

Victoria Newlyn as Clara Schumann WilliamsRoderick Victoria Newlyn Iain Burnside piano Tickets: £25.00; £23.00 Unwaged/Disabled; £5.00 Under 26s/Full-time Students Shining Armour, by Iain Burnside, a re-working of Brahms’s Die schöne Magelone Brahms’s Die schöne Magelone, his only song cycle, is a tale of chivalric love, of knights in shining armour based on Ludwig Tieck’s novella The wondrous love story of the beautiful Magelone and Count Peter of Provence. The songs that make up Brahms’s cycle do not carry the drama along, but rather comment upon the story. For the cycle to work in a recital setting, the songs benefit from a connecting narrative that can serve to flesh out the story. Iain Burnside has brilliantly penned spoken interludes, as though told by Clara Schumann, that illuminate the song cycle as well as her relationship with Brahms. New light is cast on this rarely performed masterpiece, and there can be few finer champions of the work than Roderick Williams, Iain Burnside and Victoria Newlyn. ‘Britain’s best baritone’ Opera Magazine on Roderick Williams ‘But the star of the show is undoubtedly Burnside, playing throughout with unfailing intensity and sensitivity: voice and piano are truly equal partners here, and the results are electrifying.’ The Daily Telegraph on Burnside
