NKU honors Castellini as master entrepreneur January 15, 2013, 4:40 PM ET Written by The Enquirer

Bob Castellini, who built his family company into one of the largest distributors of fruits, vegetables and floral items in the nation, has been named a Master Entrepreneur by Northern Kentucky University.

Students at NKU’s Fifth Third Bank Entrepreneurship Institute select each year’s winner, which is approved by the institute’s advisory board. The institute is part of NKU’s Haile U.S. Bank College of Business.

The school is honoring Castellini for his work at Castellini Group of Companies; as owner and chief executive officer of the Cincinnati Reds; and his philanthropic efforts in the community, said John McIlwraith, president of the advisory board and managing director of downtown-based Allos Ventures. Allos invests in early stage companies.

In an interview last year with the Enquirer, Castellini reflected on his early days at Castellini Co., where he started working at age 25, and how he helped build the company into a $1 billion-a-year business. In 2011, Castellini Co. reported $1.02 billion in revenue, making it the fifth-largest privately held company in the annual Deloitte Cincinnati USA 100 survey.

Castellini said an MBA from the Wharton School of Business taught him how to approach business problems and find the right solutions. And his real-world education at Castellini Co., where he came to work at 4 a.m. every Monday through Friday, gave him key insights into the importance of teamwork.

He added that along with vision and hiring good people, every entrepreneur must understand the importance of cash flow.

“Make sure you’ve done enough planning to muster the cash flow that you’re going to need,” he said. “Cash invariably ends many startups.”

Castellini was honored last year with the Carl H. Lindner Jr. Award for Entrepreneurial and Civic Spirit as part of the Deloitte Cincinnati USA 100 survey of the largest privately owned companies in the region.

Still no word on Rolen January 15, 2013, 4:09 PM ET By John Fay

As of yesterday afternoon, the Reds still had not heard from Scott Rolen. Rolen is deciding whether to play or retire.

I reached out to Rolen yesterday. I have not heard back. You have to go through channels to try to get him. He gives you an are- you-kidding? look when you ask for his offseason phone number. He’s great to deal with during the season, but he’s not one to seek publicity.

Again, my guess is he retires. Obviously, it’s been a tough decision or it would not have taken this long.

Spring training is only 27 days away. The Reds roster is pretty tight — even for bench spots. Dusty Baker mentioned that when I talked to him last week.
