Last week the English IV classes hosted their very own tea party and celebrated by dressing properly for the occasion. Ladies wore hats, which are very popular at English events and the men wore bow ties. Martin Wilmott, a native of England, visited the tea parties and assisted the students in achieving the highest level of authenticity. Mr. Wilmott taught the students how to make a proper British Tea. Students also brought in British foods such as cucumber sandwiches, trifle, lemon curd tarts, and lemon bars. In addition to his demonstrations, he acted as resident photographer in order to capture some candid moments during the tea.

Sponsors Needed for Academic Letter Jackets Central High School rewards students who demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence through its Academic Letter Jacket program each year. Letter jackets with the academic insignia are presented to the juniors and seniors who have met rigorous qualifications. Students who have earned jackets for athletic excellence receive an academic patch to add to their jacket. This year 87 students will be awarded Academic Jackets or patches. These students have earned this achievement by demonstrating their academic excellence in maintaining a high GPA, completing honors coursework, and passing all classes. Central High is currently seeking sponsors to make contributions in order to help recognize these young scholars. The presentation of the jackets has been postponed until April to allow for funds to be raised. Donations in any amount will be greatly appreciated.

Please call Gigi Starns at 225-261-3438 or E-mail Scott Credeur at [email protected] for donation information. 10 POWERCAT PRESS Thursday, February 21, 2013 • CentralSpeaks.com Print Edition Shelby Breckwoldt, Taylor Coomes, and Kellie Watts - 2nd Wildcats Bring Home Honors from 2013 Place Poster Competition State Beta Convention by Beta Club Member Faith Story Every year, public schools from all over the state send some of their best students to the Louisiana State Beta Convention. Students who attend the annual convention must become members of the National Beta Club by joining their school’s club. To become a Beta member, students must excel in academics, leadership, and service, which are the morals on which the National Beta Club was built. More specifi cally: a student at CHS must maintain a 3.5 GPA to be in Beta. The Beta convention is an opportunity for Beta members from all over the state to come together and represent their school by competing in activities ranging from quiz Bowl to a talent show. At this year’s convention, Central took home second in the poster making competition (Shelby Breckwoldt, Taylor Coomes, and Kellie Watts), second in color pencil sketching (Landon Smith), and fi rst in current events (Morgan Miles). Yet, as betas nearly packed the Cajun Dome for convention this year, the atmosphere was not a competitive one. It was one of joy, as complete strangers played games together, encouraged each other, and became friends. This friendliness is deeply rooted in the heart of every Beta I have ever met, and that’s what makes Beta so special.

Over the past few years, LSU and the other local colleges have been sending more and more of their teaching candidates to Central High School in order for these students to complete their teaching certifi cation. The professors and administrators in the education department have consistently praised CHS as a positive learning environment fi lled will highly skilled personnel as well as exemplary and diverse learners. We (the new student teachers) could not be happier at Central and happily brag at our cohort meetings with other teachers-in-training. The staff and students have been unbelievably receptive and welcoming to all of us, and we feel truly lucky to be placed with such gifted teachers and interesting and hilarious students. Thank you to all of the teachers, administration, and students who have invited us so graciously into your classrooms. We are looking forward to the rest of the semester continuing to exceed our expectations.
