Fiscal Year June 30, 2019 ANNUAL REPORT Museum Board of Trustees

Board Chair Ryan J. Hagemann A Museum for All

Collections Chair By Ryan J. Hagemann Cameron Kerr Museum Board Chair Finance Chair Lori Ray The core of the High Desert Museum’s mission has long been to share dynamic, educational exhibitions and programs, as well as to create a welcoming atmosphere for all. Thanks to your support, the Museum Development Chair experienced a banner year of making this mission a reality. Tom Triplett Over the past five years, our attendance has increased by 26 percent — record-breaking growth for Governance Chair Nelson Mathews the Museum! Last year, nearly 200,000 visitors were able to observe the agility of otters, discover a porcupine sleeping in a tree, pump water on a 1904 ranch, and reflect on a landscape painting by Executive Director James Lavadour. Dana Whitelaw, Ph.D. In part, this growth is augmented by our expanding initiatives to extend access to the Museum to those Marilyn Beem Ryan W. Bounds who might not otherwise be able to visit. Last year, through these initiatives, 18,498 individuals entered Gretchen Brooks for free or at a reduced rate. For example, we expanded our National Endowment for the Arts Blue Star Bobby Brunoe Museum program, which provides free admission to active duty military and their families, from the Abigail Cannon Kathryn Collins summer to year-round. Gary Cutler Gail Hayes Davis Other initiatives have continued to make the Museum accessible to community members. During Julie Drinkward the federal furlough last spring, we offered federal employees and their families free admission. Our Delia Feliciano quarterly Museum & Me events enable individuals who experience disabilities and their families to visit Jim Franzen Peter J. Hall after hours at no cost, and Little Wonders provides free memberships to Head Start families. Margi Heater Sharon Hewitt Our growing number of visitors are experiencing new, innovative programming. With the support of Andy Jordan a prestigious Community Foundation Creative Heights grant, the Museum’s recent exhibition, Al Kennedy Randy Miller Desert Reflections: Water Shapes the West, brought together artists, scientists, culture keepers, poets Romy Mortensen and scholars to evoke new understandings of how water shapes the cultural and natural landscape of Josh Newton the American West. For its innovative and collaborative approach, the exhibition won the 2019 Charles Kevin Palmer Don Paterson Redd Center for Western Studies Award for Exhibition Excellence. Greg Rasmussen Peter Richter You are a vital part of making this growth possible. Thanks to you, as visitors, members, donors and Steve Shropshire volunteers, moments of wonder happen every day at the Museum. Susan Skalski Justin Snyder Andrea Streedain Rich Wininger
