The Governor of H.E and the CHS, CEO Dr Paul Wekesa after signing the CHS and Kitui County MoU WHO WE ARE Centre for Health Solutions – (CHS) is a local, not-for-profit organisation that utilises local expertise as well as strategic partnerships to implement evidence informed solutions and interventions to existing and emerging public health concerns across all of Kenya’s 47 counties. Guided by a vision of a world of healthy families through universal access to health interventions and services, CHS works in partnership with the national and county governments, donors and other stakeholders for the delivery of sustainable health services. Through its Naishi Project, CHS is focused on achieving HIV epidemic control in Kitui, and Makueni through the provision of high quality HIV prevention, care and treatment services. For more than a decade, the United States President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEFPAR), through the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been working in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Kitui County to strengthen health systems towards the delivery of sustainable health services.

Using the World Health Organization (WHO) approach to health systems strengthening, CDC has invested heavily in service delivery, health leadership and governance, human resources for health, health infrastructure and equipment, health information systems as well as health products and commodity security.

With support from PEPFAR through CDC, CHS is currently supporting 89 health facilities in the county to implement and expand sustainable high quality HIV services specifically comprehensive HIV prevention, care and treatment with improved yield and retention of patients on treatment.

The county has recruited over 350 health care workers since devolution. To respond to the HIV epidemic, the county developed and adopted a five-year county specific HIV/AIDS strategic plan to guide its response to the epidemic and has proposed to increase her domestic funding for HIV response in the coming years. Kitui CHMT has embraced county mentorship model of supporting health care workers to monitor and improve services for sustainability.

Health Infrastructure Support Through partnerships with Kitui County Government, CHS has provided Information and Technology infrastructure and support to (Electrical Medical Records) in 21 high volume facilities. In addition, the project has supported hospital staff training on IQ Care with eight (8) facilities including Kitui County Referral Hospital fully transitioned to the paperless point of care (POC) system

Equipment Support CDC, through CHS mechanism, has investments worth Kshs 12,303,107 on medical equipment for various health facilities in Kitui county over the last three years. This equipment and supplies include biosafety cabinets, CD4 county analysers, biochemistry analysers, haematology analyser, Cryotherapy machine, refrigerators, microscopes and IT equipment among others. Additional four (4) HIV testing booths were built in Kitui CRH, Mwingi SCH and Kyuso SCH.
