We are writing to share our support for a Clean Fuel Standard in Washington. As municipal leaders, we have committed to taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to spur investment in a clean energy economy, protect our residents from poor air quality, and address the devastating impacts of climate change. We are rethinking our planning for smarter land use, making significant investments in transit, taking steps towards cleaner fleets, and implementing green building requirements, but we can and must do more. We recognize the urgency and necessity for a policy that addresses transportation fuels. Not only is the transportation sector our state’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, but toxic air pollution from cars and diesel trucks and buses is also one of the largest contributors to poor air quality that threatens the health of our communities throughout the state. Asthma, heart and lung disease, and other respiratory illnesses disproportionately impact communities of color and people with lower incomes who are more likely to live near high-volume roadways. This means cleaning up air pollution is critical to advancing environmental justice. The Clean Fuel Standard is a key strategy to clean up our air by establishing pollution limits for transportation fuels sold in Washington. It reduces climate and air pollution while also creating local economic development opportunities by investing more of our fuel dollars in clean fuels that are produced right here in Washington. We are excited about a policy that can grow our local clean energy economy, provide opportunities for new businesses to flourish, and keep more of our transportation dollars in-state, while helping our residents to gradually transition to healthier fuel choices. Washington is the only remaining west coast jurisdiction without a Clean Fuel Standard, so we urge you join Oregon, California and British Columbia and bring the benefits of this proven policy to our residents here in Washington. We look forward to supporting your efforts as you move forward with action on this important issue.
