Cottbus, 11.12. 2015 Call for Application

On behalf of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg in Cottbus is organizing the

International DAAD Alumni Seminar Accelerating the Deployment of Renewable Energy Technol- ogies in Developing Countries April 17 th - 24 th 2016 in Cottbus, Germany

followed by a

visit to the world's unique trade fair that exhibits industrial technology, the Hannover Messe 2016 April 25 th - 29 th 2016 in Hannover, Germany

Background and Seminar Goals

Energy is the engine of economic development and its role in the devel- opment of developing countries where biomass is the main energy source for millions of people is crucial. Inadequate access to energy is one of the greatest challenges facing developing countries. With these countries’ share of global gross domestic product (GDP) estimated to increase; adequate, affordable and reliable energy will be required to power the economies. Renewable energy can help developing countries to achieve higher GDPs and new levels of prosperity. With drawbacks of conventional energy and given the enormous renewable energy potential in developing countries, there is a need for promoting its large scale de- ployment to power development. It is against this backdrop that the BTU is organizing the Alumni seminar.

The seminar is designed to offer its participants a comprehensive insight into the strategies for accelerating the deployment of renewable energy technologies in developing countries in a cost-efficient way. It will provide Alumni with an overview of renewable energy state-of-the-art technolo-

gies, their application to propel socio-economic development, potential contribution to energy sustainability, innovative policies that promote renewable energy and address barriers that have played a critical role in impeding rapid deployment and investment in this sector. It will enhance scientific knowledge and good practices with respect to energy genera- tion and utilization.

Hannover Messe

After the programme in Cottbus, Alumni will travel to Hannover to visit the Hannover Messe 2016 which is the world's leading trade fair that exhibits industrial technology innovations and groundbreaking solutions on renewable energy and energy efficiency. The trade fair visit will pro- vide Alumni with a practical insight into renewable energy latest technol- ogies and an opportunity to establish business contacts with renewable energy enterprises in Germany. The seminar and trade fair will contrib- ute in building Alumni capacity in renewable energy technologies and also motivate them to promote rapid deployment of such technologies in their respective countries.
